Facts About Mutant Gambit:
The Anti-Hero Gambit has become one of Marvel’s most popular mutant in no time, all thanks to his Charm and Crazy Card skills. Gambit’s back story is full of depth and it is a shame that it hasn’t been explored properly in a live-action form. As we are now living in the Comic-book movie era, we will definitely see Gambit on the big screen, it is just a matter of when.
#1: Creation and Debut
Gambit was created by the writer Chris Claremont, artist Jim Lee and he was drawn by artist Mike Collins and he made his first appearances in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 back in July 1990 and Uncanny X-Men #266 in August 1990. Gambit was an influential member of the thieves guild before becoming a full-time X-Men member and he has switched sides several times.
#2: Origin and History
Gambit or Remy Etienne LeBeau was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Just after being born he was kidnapped from the hospital by a bunch of thieves who belonged to the LeBeau Clan Thieves’ Guild, who gave Remy to the Antiquary as a tribute. They referred to him as “Le Diable Blanc” or The White Devil and they believed that he was prophesied to unite the warring Thieves’ and Assassins’ Guilds after they saw a hint of power in him.
#3: He learned a lot of skills and abilities along the way
Gambit is one of the most powerful mutants in the entire Marvel universe and his primary power is Kinetic Conversion and Acceleration. He is a skilled Card thrower, who can generate Static. His other abilities include Foresight via Tarot Cards, Kinetic Energy Manipulation, Thermal Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation, and Energy Physiology.
#4: He has Uncontrollable Amounts of Power
Gambit’s full potential was scary as his powers virtually had no limit. He is among the top brass, but he could not withstand his powers. So, he went to Mister Sinister for help and Sinister obliged. He modified Gambit’s power by removing a portion of Gambit’s Brain Stem, making him significantly less powerful, but now he could control his powers. After years, a younger version of Mr. Sinister surgically returned it upon Gambit’s request.
#5: Gambit has Defeated Wolverine
Wolverine is undoubtedly the most popular mutant, and rightfully so. When Gambit was enrolled into the X-Men, the majority of mutants were fine with it, except Wolverine. He did not trust Gambit and had his doubts about him. This ultimately led to a Danger Room duel between the two in which Gambit was able to triumph by using a robotic doppelganger of Lady Deathstrike to distract Wolverine. Gambit took advantage of Wolverine’s previous injury to defeat him.
#6: Gambit was cast out of the X-Men
After Rogue kissed Gambit, it was revealed to her that Gambit had assembled the team of Marauders for Mr. Sinister and he had a hand in the massacre of Morlocks. She also came to know that Gambit saved a single girl from the Marauders during the massacre. Rogue absorbed Gambit’s guilt which ultimately caused her to reject him. Subsequently, he was cast out of the X-Men and abandoned in the frozen wastes of Antarctica.
#7: Gambit became Apocalypse’s Horseman, Death
After The Evil mutant Apocalypse made a reappearance, Gambit submitted himself to the villain which was shocking for everyone. He transformed into one of Apocalypse’s Horseman, Death. However, it was later revealed that Gambit planned to infiltrate himself in Apocalypse’s ranks to protect the X-Men, but he miscalculated the power of Apocalypse as the transformation process warped his mind as well as his body. Eventually, he did manage to regain control.
#8: Rogue’s Foster mother Mystique tried to seduce him
In the comic books, Mystique was the foster mother of Rogue and she was displeased with Rogue’s choice of lovers. She transformed into a student and joined Gambit’s squad in an attempt to ruin his relationship with Rogue. Gambit resisted her charms completely, so she transformed into Rogue and offered Gambit a Rogue with whom he could have a physical relationship.
#9: Gambit has another Superpower – Money
As you all know by now that Gambit grew up with thieves, and thanks to that he became good at stealing. He grew up as the son of the leader of New Orleans’ Thieves Guild and Lebeau Clan, which made Gambit the Prince of thieves. Thanks to this, he has a small fortune for himself which he has collected by stealing things throughout his life.
#10: He almost fulfilled the prophecy
Everyone believed that Gambit was prophesied to unite the warring Thieves’ and Assassins’ Guilds after they saw a hint of power in him and Gambit almost did it. He married Bella Donna Boudreaux, the daughter of the Assassins Guild. This move halted the war between the two guilds and brought peace. But after the wedding, Bella’s brother challenged Gambit in a fight and he was accidentally killed by Gambit, which escalated the war again.
