The six Infinity Stones of Marvel Comics were the reason that the Infinity War happened. They were the reason billions and trillions of lives all across the universe were lost to the ramblings of a madman bent on bringing his twisted sense of balance back to the universe. Each stone controls one aspect of the Universe – Soul, Power, Reality, Space, Time and Mind. Together, they give its wielder the ability to play God. That is what Thanos made so formidable in Avengers: Infinity War.
But even after so many months of the release of Infinity War, most of us still do not have any idea as to how and what were the back stories of the six Infinity Stones. Until now that is. Marvel Comics has finally revealed how the Infinity Stones came into being and the story will petrify you for sure.
SPOILER ALERT – Major Spoilers for Infinity Wars #5 up ahead. If you still have not read it yet and intend to in the near future, we suggest you look away….
The Infinity Stones are undoubtedly powerful. But the level of power they bestow on their wielders is so scary that many of us would not even be able to survive a second if we touch the stones barehanded. For decades, the Infinity Stones just existed.
They were said to be remnants of the old universe by some while others theorized that the stones were parts of a dead cosmic God. There were so many theories regarding the origin of the Infinity Stones that we lost count of them a long while ago.
There was also no official confirmation from Marvel Comics regarding the same. Now, with Infinity Wars #5, we have a vague idea as to how these artifacts were created and helped shape the future of the Marvel Comics Universe.
Things got even more complicated when it was found that there were multiple universes that existed along the multi-verse plane, each with its own set of Infinity Stones. In the mainstream universe as well, the Soul Stone was the only stone that had somewhat of an origin story.
The rest just came into Warlock’s possession when he was trying to race against time and Thanos to locate the stones from falling into the Mad Titan’s hands. The back story of the Infinity Stones was only recently released after Loki, the Asgardian God of mischief, decided to do some exploring in another universe.
In the fifth issue of Infinity Wars, Loki backstabs his team of Infinity Watch a steals the six Infinity Stones from Gamora inside the Soul World. He then decides to use the stones to travel to the end of time, where he believes that he will be able to gain access to unlimited energy and become a cosmic entity. He lands upon a location called the Quarry of Gods, where he makes a startling discovery.
The Infinity Stones were just the first batch. At the end of time, thousands of these rocks exist. And they were not created but mined. As it turns out, a group of Celestials have been mining stones from the Quarry and seeding those stones in different universes and alternate realities.
Loki now realizes that this special race of Celestials is the true gods of the Marvel Multi-Verse and they have been manipulating everything from the very beginning! Loki demands answers but the issue ends right before he gets any. Guess we will have to wait and find out what the Celestial miners have to say about this.
Until then, Cheerio and stay tuned for further updates.
Loki appeared last in Avengers: Infinity War. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:
Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artefacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.
