The first trailer of Marvel’s What If…? has been recently released. The series is scheduled to premiere on August 11 on Disney+. The series has promised to take a moment from MCU history and have something different happen than what happened in the movies. It is based on the Marvel Comics of the same name and the trailer has shown a lot of things that the fans can expect from the series. This includes turning heroes into villains, giving different people roles in the MCU, and eliminating a superhero from the universe. So, here are all the things revealed by the What If trailer:
1. Howard the Duck Will Show Up
Howard the Duck has been in the MCU for most of the time but he never gets much to do on screen. He was locked in one of The Collector’s cages and drank a martini while Cosmo the Space Dog licked Collector at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. He again appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on a date at Contraxia where the Ravagers spent free time. He also took part in the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. It is unknown where he will fit in What If…?
2. Hawkeye could kill Thor
In the first Thor movie, Thor lost his worthiness where Odin took away his Mjolnir and sent him to Earth. He was stuck on Earth without regaining his power. When he got to know that Mjolnir has crashed on Earth, he tried to get the hammer back but failed to lift it from the ground. Agent Coulson sent Hawkeye in case they needed to take Thor out, but he left Thor. But here, Hawkeye will release the arrow and kill Thor and this will change everything.
3. Marvel zombies are included
The most exciting moment of the What If…? trailer is that it shows one of Marvel’s most popular alternate world storylines. Iron Man and Captain America ended up as zombies and it looks that one of the MCU changes will feature the Marvel Zombies storyline. It is unknown which storyline this can branch off from, but bringing the classic comic storyline from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman to the What If…? series can make it the most popular episode of the first season.
4. T’Challa is a Ravager / Star Lord
Killmonger leads an attack on Wakanda but there is no sign of T’Challa. It seems to be a major change from Guardians of the Galaxy. It looked like Yondu did not abduct Peter Quill from Earth many years ago. He instead abducted T’Challa and raised him to be a Ravager. There were scenes with T’Challa stealing the Power Stone that Peter took and then later with him and Yondu working together. This looked like a close partnership than the one the Ravager had with Quill.
5. A new Iron Man
Here we will get to see that iron Man showed up much earlier than expected. Instead of Tony Stark becoming Iron Man several years later, it seems like Howard Stark created the first Iron Man in World War II. There is a possibility that it is Steve Rogers as Iron Man in the What If…? trailer. But this is still a guess and the identity will be revealed once the show premieres on Disney+. The man who is inside the armor is working with Peggy Carter in World War II.
6. Killmonger saved Tony Stark
MCU’s Erik Killmonger is one of the most popular villains. His backstory shows that he had a tough childhood after Black Panther’s father murders his father and leaves him alone as a boy. Killmonger joins the military and becomes a Navy SEAL with training that aids his attempt to take over Wakanda. It looks like Killmonger has changed here in Iron Man’s story and saves Tony Stark from the abduction that turns him into Iron Man. Later we see Killmonger leading an attack on Wakanda with the tech supplied by the man he saved. So this means Tony may not become Iron Man.
7. Peggy is Captain Carter
The story of Captain America will also get a major change. This was revealed a long time before the trailer release of What If…? The change here will be that Peggy Carter will be injected with the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. But the trailer looks like she will not be Captain America. Peggy introduces herself as Captain Carter and her costume is that of the Marvel character Captain Britain. Peggy as Captain Britain will change the dynamic of what Captain America meant to the U.S. in World War II.
8. Loki leads Asgard against Nick Fury
If Thor will die in the What If…? episode on the basis of the first movie, this can lead to another massive series of shots from the first trailer. The moment shows Loki leading the troops of Asgard to Earth. They face off with Nick Fury and military forces. These Asgardians include Volstagg and the others and there is a chance that Thor’s death can lead Loki to take the war on Earth and avenge the death of his brother.
9. Avengers of the Galaxy
T’Challa takes over the role of Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill and this changes the direction of the character. Peter has not been a brave or a morally conscious character but T’Challa kept his character from the looks of the What If…? trailer. It looks like it led T’Challa back to Earth. In a switch from The Avengers, it was not the titular heroes that protected Earth from Loki’s alien invasion and it looked to be the Guardians of the Galaxy with the Guardians protecting the New York City.
10. Doctor Strange and Shuma Gorath
As seen in the trailer, Captain Britain has to deal with a villain who is a Master of the Mystic Arts in Doctor Strange. It looks like Strange is a villain in Peggy’s story and he is also being helped by the lord of Chaos in Shuma Gorath. The shot is pretty fast in the trailer but Peggy is fighting a Cthulhu-looking creature and it can be Shuma Gorath. It is a powerful and ancient demon that wants dark power and is immortal and can lead Peggy into a battle that Captain America never had to face.
