Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Where Is Zeus After His Darkseid Fight?

Where is Zeus after his fight with Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s Justice League? DC Extended Universe has confirmed the existence of the Greek Gods including Zeus, Artemis, and Ares. They played an extensive role in DCEU’s mythology. Wonder Woman unveiled that Zeus was the creator of Themyscira. It is the island Diana Prince and the Amazonians call home. But by the time of the film’s events during the First World War, Zeus was long gone.

Justice League brought him back in the flashback battle against Darkseid, a villain willing to conquer Earth. His whereabouts in the aftermath are connected with Ares, the God of War. As seen in Justice League, Zeus and the Old Gods joined humans, Atlanteans, Green Lantern Corps, and the Amazon warriors in the battle against Darkseid. But it is clear that Zeus is no longer around in the present day. Still, he looks to have survived the devastating battle with the alien conqueror.

The story of Zeus’ downfall is unveiled to Diana at the beginning of the titular film. This effectively closes the timeline gap related to the whereabouts of Zeus following his role in the battle against Darkseid. Also, the war against him might have been the last time when Zeus fought along with his son Ares just before their own conflict. When Zeus and the legion of warriors defeated and banished Darkseid from Earth, he sought to stop people from killing each other and turning on the Amazons who were created by Zeus to help bring peace to Earth.

Along with offering some help, Ares also started his own war with the Old Gods by killing them all and corrupting humans out of hatred and jealousy. In this situation, Ares plays a similar role to biblical Lucifer. Both of them rebelled against their fathers. Zeus fought his son, banished him from Mount Olympus, and weakened his powers. But Ares dealt the final blow by killing his father. Before dying, Zeus created Themyscira for Amazons. He hoped they would be protected from Ares and be around when he returned finally to finish what he started.

But Zeus looks to have gone from one battle to another without taking much rest. Hippolyta confirms in Wonder Woman that there was some peace in the aftermath of the Amazons’ creation. But it was short-lived before Ares waged war on his father and the rest of the Old Gods. The war is a reason why Zeus is no longer around and was only seen in a flashback scene to ancient times in Justice League. The timeline of events suggests that he died not long after his battle with Darkseid, although it could have been hundreds of years.

The demise of the Old Gods and Ares in Wonder Woman answered the question why none of them appeared to fight Darkseid for the second time. Neglecting the death of Zeus at the hands of Ares, it can be said that the spirit of Zeus lives on in superheroes like Wonder Woman. She knows and can speak about his history in the same way she did in Justice League, and Shazam, whose powers are enhanced by Zeus. DCEU fans will probably never get to know what Zeus was like first-hand unless he is seen in another flashback scene in a future DCEU film. Wonder Woman and Justice League confirm that he was always ready for battle and risked a lot for protecting Earth by taking on Darkseid and Ares one after another.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League released on March 18, 2021, on HBO Max. The film features Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ciarán Hinds in the lead roles.

Here’s the official synopsis of the film:

In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad, and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
