Avengers: Infinity War Directors Talk About The Fan Theory of Groot And The Stormbreaker

Avengers: Infinity War was the biggest and probably the best MCU movie ever. This was not your typical Marvel movie which is just a light-hearted fun adventure, but it was way more than that, having real stakes and consequences. The movie was a complete package as it had emotion, drama, suspense, thrill, humor, sci-fi moments and hardcore action. The movie ended in the most thrilling way possible and you would never have seen it coming and seeing the end we all had our jaws dropped on the floor.

Right from the start of the movie, it was being teased that if Thanos managed to collect all the Infinity Stones, he would be able to wipe out half the population of the entire Universe with a Snap of his fingers. First Gamora teased it in the beginning, then Thanos told Doctor Strange the same thing. Thanos’ main motive was to bring balance in this universe, and to do that, he was willing to do what no one else would, which was wipe out half the Universe’s population so that the half that would survive would not have to live in poverty and can use the resources of the world in the most justified manner.

While did manage to snap his fingers towards the end, disintegrating half the population of the entire Universe, the Avengers actually did everything they could to stop him from accomplishing his above-mentioned mission. Each and every one took part in the battle against the Mad Titan and his armies and made their contributions towards trying to stop Thanos. While Thanos managed to take down almost all of them, Thor actually stuck a winning blow over Thanos, which as it turned out was not enough.

In the movie, Thor to great lengths to stop Thanos, and bring justice to the lives of the ones he had killed by taking him down. Right in the beginning of the movie, Thanos had killed Heimdall, Loki and half of the left over Asgardians. Thor managed to survive and he met the Guardians next. After that, he went on the journey to forge a new weapon along with his new team mates Rocket and Groot. He did manage to bring in the new Axe Hammer, Stormbreaker to counter the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. The Stormbreaker as we saw was built on Nivadellir and Groot had a major hand (literally) in building it.

After the Hammer was forged, Eitri could not locate the handle, so Groot used his own limbs to bring the mould together, and then he cut off his own arm to form the handle for Stormbreaker. This allowed Thor to access the power of the weapon and regenerate. But it also led to a major fan theory that we will talk about later.

Towards the end, Thor made a winning blow by striking the Stormbreaker right into Thanos’ heart. But since he did not go for the head and wanted to make Thanos feel for the crimes he had committed, it allowed Thanos to snap his fingers and escape. This brought in the Disintegration and Groot was amongst the heroes that turned into ash.

Now, this is where the fan theory comes in. many fans suggested that Groot may still be brought back to life as a part of his body still lives with the Stormbreaker. As we know, in the first Guardians movie, Groot sacrificed himself to save the team. Later Rocket planted him in a pot which allowed a new version of Groot to be born. So many fans suggest that this could be done again using the handle of the Stormbreaker, or at least a part of it.

Well, we don’t know that whether it will be done in the future movies, but something interesting has happened. Joe and Anthony Russo recently had an interview with the Huffington Post. In that interview they addressed this fact saying:

“I don’t know if every piece of him that detaches … can grow a future version of him, but who’s to say? That’s an interesting question.”

The point we need to note here is that the co-director didn’t really confirm or deny this theory. So it may or may not be the case in Avengers 4. But one thing is for sure. At least the characters who were disintegrated in the movie will surely return towards the end of Avengers 4. So, in one way or another, we will see Groot take form once again.

Avengers 4 will come out on May 3, 2019.
