With the 6th month coming to an end, the first half of 2021 has passed away. One good thing about these 6 months was that the pandemic has been a bit under control as a result of which theaters have operated properly. Now talking about the movies, the horror genre has been a bit ahead this time in comparison to others. Big budget films have been postponed to increase the chances of more box office collections. A few have been simultaneously released in theaters along with streaming platforms. So let’s look at the highest grossing Horror Movies of 2021 so far.

1. In The Earth ($1.1 million)
Directed by Ben Wheatley, In The Earth released on April 16, 2021. The film has grossed $1.1 million worldwide. The film is about a deadly virus that has ravaged the world and people are trying to find a cure and ways to live despite the existence of the virus. The film has received moderate reviews. In The Earth features Joel Fry, Reece Shearsmith, Hayley Squires, Ellora Torchia, John Hollingworth, and Mark Monero in the lead roles.
2. The Unholy ($30 million)
Supernatural horror film The Unholy is based on the 1983 novel Shrine written by James Herbert. Directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, the film has received negative reviews from critics. But still, it has performed well at the domestic box office. The film is about a young girl Alice who suffers from hearing impairment and claims to have been granted the power to see, hear and heal the infirmed after she is visited by the Virgin Mary. The film was released by Sony Pictures Releasing on April 2, 2021.
3. A Quiet Place Part II ($226 million)
A Quiet Place Part II is a sequel to the 2018 horror film, A Quiet Place. Just like the predecessor, A Quiet Place Part II has received a positive response from the critics and audience. It is directed by John Krasinski who was also the director of the first film. It revisits the survival story of the Abbott family as they continue to traverse the land of post-apocalyptic America in total silence as a way to keep the dangerous monsters at bay. The film has grossed $226 million worldwide and was released on May 28, 2021.
4. Wrong Turn ($3.7 million)
The seventh film of the Wrong Turn franchise was released 7 years later after the sixth film. Since the last three parts failed to meet the expectations, this was made as a reboot. The critical reception to the film has also improved. Directed by Mike P. Nelson, the film revolved around a group of hikers who come upon a sect called The Foundation at the Appalachian trail and find ways to survive. The film was released on January 26, 2021, and features Charlotte Vega, Adain Bradley, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Dylan McTee, Daisy Head, and Matthew Modine in lead roles.
5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It ($145 million)
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the eighth film in The Conjuring Universe. The film arrives almost five years after the release of The Conjuring 2. The film is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a murder trial that took place in Connecticut in 1981. James Wan served as a producer for the film this time and it was directed by Michael Chaves. Chaves has also been the director of another film in this franchise, The Curse of La Llorona, released in 2019. The film has grossed $142.8 million and was released on June 4, 2021.
6. The Resort ($191k)
Despite getting a limited theatrical release, the American horror film The Resort has sold more than 20,000 tickets at the box office. It has grossed $191,996 worldwide. The film is directed by Taylor Chien and revolves around four friends who head to Hawaii to investigate reports of a haunting at an abandoned resort and hopes to find the infamous “Half-Faced Girl”. The Resort features Bianca Haase, Brock O’Hurn, Michael Vlamis, Michelle Randolph, Avery Pascual, Joaquin Veizaga, and Lizzie Gordon in the lead roles.
7. Separation ($4.5 million)
Directed by William Brent Bell, Separation has grossed $4.5 million worldwide despite receiving negative reviews from critics. The film is about 8-year-old Jenny, played by Violet McGraw who is suffering from PTSD. She starts to heal with the help of her mother’s deceased spirit. Jenny goes into deep despair after her mother Maggie dies in a hit-and-run accident. Jenny then starts to feel better with the help of her artist father’s toy puppets and the comfort provided by her mother’s ghost. But a custody battle between her father and grandfather triggers the dark side of the puppets.
8. The Reckoning ($143k)
Adventure horror film The Reckoning was released on August 20, 2020. Directed by Neil Marshall, the film is about a woman who is accused of being a witch after she loses her husband to plague. The film has received negative reviews. But still, it has made good collections at the box office. The recent reports say that it collected $143,522 and the collections were a bit affected because of the negative reviews. The film features Charlotte Kirk, Joe Anderson, Steven Waddington, and Sean Pertwee in the lead roles.
9. Spiral ($40 million)
Spiral is the ninth installment in the Saw film series. The franchise is popular for the torture violence its showcases on screen. Spiral is directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and was released on May 14, 2021. Compared to the previous installments, critical reception towards Spiral improved a bit. The film follows a sadistic copycat killer who starts to design elaborate death traps in the vein of Jigsaw. Detective Zeke Banks, played by Chris Rock is then hired to catch the culprit.
10. Willy’s Wonderland ($431k)
American action comedy horror film Willy’s Wonderland is directed by Kevin Lewis. The film revolves around a quiet drifter who is tricked into cleaning up an abandoned family entertainment center haunted by eight murderous animatronic characters. It has received mixed reviews and got a limited theatrical release on 12 February 2021. The film features Nicolas Cage, Emily Tosta, Ric Reitz, Chris Warner, Kai Kaldec, Christian Del Grosso, Caylee Cowan, Terayle Hill, Jonathan Mercedes, David Sheftell, and Beth Grant in the lead roles.
