Henry Cavill has managed to impress a majority of people with his Superman. Mind you, he is surely not a bad Superman. Those who have had problems would agree that those problems were actually related to the DCEU entirely, and not Superman. Cavill has done everything to be the Superman we deserve, and that’s why there was a fan cry to bring him back. Even now that he has returned, WB couldn’t give us the ultimate good news, i.e. the update about another solo Superman movie.
For now, Cavill is back to play Superman in a supporting role. He will be a part of multiple movies similar to how Hulk is a part of several MCU films. So, we reckon that Superman will show up in Shazam 2. He might even show up in the Flashpoint film, but let’s not take that with complete surety. And, Sups might also be used in an eventual Green Lantern movie. Let’s see how WB will use him in their DC films. We are happy that he is at least back to being our main Superman.
Cavill recently appeared in Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” interview series along with Patrick Stewart. The legendary actor asked him – “If we’re lucky as actors, a role comes along, or an offer comes along, that has an enormous impact on what follows. Did that happen for you with Superman?”
“I believe it did. And it’s something I’ve always been incredibly grateful for. I’ve always been a fan of Superman. With a character like that, you carry the mantle with you off set. And it becomes part of your public representation. When you meet children, children don’t necessarily see me as Henry Cavill, but they might see Superman, and there’s a responsibility which comes with that. Because it’s such a wonderful character, it’s actually a responsibility I’m happy to have, and I hope that I get to play more of Superman in years to come.”
Obviously, Superman turned out to be a huge break in Cavill’s career. Today, he has done roles in films & shows like The Man from UNCLE, Mission: Impossible 6, and The Witcher due to his Superman performance. He could’ve gotten this break way back if he was chosen as Bond in Casino Royale, or Superman in Superman Returns. But he had to wait. And even he has acknowledged the fact that Man of Steel was huge for him. In fact, playing Superman motivates him to become a better person.
“My life has changed dramatically because of it. And it has given me plenty of opportunity for roles, and yeah, it’s been one of those characters which changed the entire course of my career. I’m incredibly grateful for it, and it’s also taught me a lot about myself.
He’s so good, he’s so kind, and when you start to compare yourself to him, because you’re playing him, you start to really look inwards. You say, “Am I a good person? Can I be a good enough person to play Superman?”
And if you ever hear a whisper in there which is like, “Hmm, hold on a second. Maybe not,” then you adjust it, and you make sure you are a better person. I think that’s all we can do in life.”
It’s just crazy that WB doesn’t think that Cavill’s Superman movie cannot hold its own on the big screen. We’ve discussed why WB is in a limbo for trying to make Man of Steel 2, but they totally shouldn’t be. An anonymous source told Heroic Hollywood what WB thinks at this point of time:
“A stand-alone Superman movie would not be successful at this time. Perhaps once there’s more momentum after playing a supporting role in some successful DC films, there would be more of a chance for a stand-alone film.”
Well, this sort of thinking is hypocritical, don’t you think? That’s because somehow, WB thinks that Man of Steel 2 won’t do good. For the last 2 years, all WB has done is invest in Superman. We had films like Death of Superman & Reign of the Supermen set in the DCAMU. Superman showed up in Batman: Hush. He got importance in the CW shows. If you think about it, 2020 has been the year of Superman. First, we got to say goodbye to Brandon Routh’s Superman in a good way. Then, WB released the Red Son Superman movie. After that, Superman had a major role to play in the DCAMU finale film, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. Following that, we got the news update that the Snyder Cut is happening and Henry Cavill will return in multiple DC films. And just yesterday, we got the new trailer for yet another film featuring Clark Kent, i.e. Superman: Man of Tomorrow. After that, Superman is getting his own series on the CW.
If all this hasn’t built enough hype for a solo Superman movie, then I don’t know what will. They already have the momentum they’re talking about, and it’s the perfect time for a Superman film. It’s extremely crazy on the part of WB because they think that a smaller character Shazam can hold his own on the big screen (wasn’t very profitably). And they even thought that Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey would be the next Deadpool (turned out to be the lowest-grossing DCEU movie). But they do not think that Superman is a character worth investing in for how. Nothing is more illogical than this thinking of WB execs. Let’s just hope that Sups will gain momentum with Shazam 2, Black Adam, and other films, and WB will ultimately succumb to the fan cry and give Man of Steel 2 a go.
