Did You Catch The Groot Reference in Hawkeye? Here’s How James Gunn Responded

Hawkeye has already released three of the six episodes of the Disney+ series and we cannot wait to see more from the show. A lot of new narratives and arcs have already been introduced in the series and we are excited to see how they will be explored in the rest of the three episodes. While the series is setting up new characters, there are also references to some major events from the past events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was quite common to see the characters of the first Avengers movie getting referenced in the movie considering Hawkeye was amongst them. But it seems that the series also made a reference to another much recent MCU character. The second episode of Hawkeye made a reference to a Guardians of the Galaxy character and James Gunn already has reacted to that. Read on to check out the Groot reference in Hawkeye.

Hawkeye

So far some of the major references have been made to the characters who were present around Hawkeye as a part of the original team of the Avengers. This has seen one exception with the character of Ant-Man being referenced numerous times in all the three episodes so far. The creators of the show clarified that it was supposed to be a joke considering Ant-Man’s presence in Rogers: The Musical would actually annoy Clint. This did end up annoying Clint as he clearly pointed that Ant-Man wasn’t present during the events the play was talking about. But now it seems that another MCU character has been referenced in the series in a very subtle manner.

Groot Reference in Hawkeye?

In the second episode of Hawkeye, when Clint starts searching for the Ronin costume, he discovers the mention of LARP (Live Action Role Play) somewhere. Later he is seen looking for that on Instagram and there he discovers the page for New York City Larpers. There is a rather exciting nod made to another character in the series if fans will closely observe the followers of this Instagram page.

Upon a closer look at the page, one can see that one of the followers for the page is titled ‘iamgr00t’ and this is a clear reference to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. This reference does make us wonder that someone on Earth knows about Groot and not only that but is also aware of Groot’s iconic dialogue – “I am Groot”. A fan ended up asking the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies about this and the director actually had an answer.

James Gunn’s Reaction

Twitter user @moviepollz asked James Gunn about this reference by tweeting,

Someone on Earth has the Instagram username iamgr00t so people on Earth not only know who Groot is, but they know his saying. Wonder how that came to be. #HawkeyeSeries

Groot Reference in Hawkeye

James Gunn has always been very active on his social media for responding to fan questions and theories regarding his projects. The directed responded to the tweet,

That’s probably the IG account of the MCU version of Rob de Groot, Dave Bautista’s stunt double. Unlike the real Rob, the MCU version is a total dick, has a posh British accent & a full, luscious head of hair. (Also, it’s a cool Easter egg.)

This reference clearly means that Groot had some interaction with the humans after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The only two times Groot comes to Earth are during the events of Infinity War and Endgame and both of these moments had a narrative where there was no chance for interaction with other human beings. It cannot be confirmed whether the people of Earth know about Guardians of the Galaxy but we can be sure that they know about Groot. We will probably get a proper explanation for this reference in a future project that indicates what happened right after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Maybe the Guardians had a few adventures on Earth by helping out the heroes present there.
