Everything We Know About What If Season 2 So Far

The Disney Plus show What If…? was supposed to have a second season way before the first season came out. Amongst the shows that are coming out in the streaming service for Marvel, WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are supposed to be limited series. It is all the more exciting to hear that the animated series will continue with a second Season considering we are not done with the series yet. The first season gave us some of the most exciting stories from all across the Marvel Cinematic Universe Multiverse. We should get a chance to see more characters and their alternate universes in the future of the MCU projects. What If Season 2 has already been greenlit. So, let’s see what we know and can expect from the second season of What If…?.

What If…? Season 1

What If…? dealt with alternating timelines in the multiverse caused by certain changes in the sacred timeline. These certain changes had a sufficiently large impact that gave us completely unique storylines. There are stories that we would have never gotten in the movies considering there are a number of things fans always wanted to see. Each episode has been able to give us narratives that have kicked off storylines for certain versions of the heroes we would have never expected to get.

Initially, the series was considered to be an anthology of stories all across the universe considering The Watcher could only narrate. But around the eighth episode, we got to discover that a certain villain outgrows The capabilities of the Watcher and this later pushes to a story that navigates around all the stories we got to see in the previous episodes. We finally get to see the Watcher participate and form a team of heroes known as the Guardians of the Multiverse. This team helps in defeating the alternate version of the villain Ultron who plays a major threat to the Multiverse.

The finale of the series was quite satisfactory but it left us with a lot of questions that also makes us wonder what we might get to see in the second season. The show was quite well received by both the fans and the critics. Rotten Tomatoes wrote about the series:

What If…? may not add much to the larger MCU narrative, but surprising takes on beloved characters and some of the best action sequences in the entire franchise make for engaging viewing.”

What If Season 2 Expectations

Initially, the series was supposed to have a total of ten episodes but the plans failed and we only got nine episodes due to the pandemic. According to the executive producer Brad Winderbaum, this tenth episode that was supposed to be in the first season will now be pushed to the second season. With plans of releasing seasons annually, we might expect the second season to come out around 2022. According to Bradley, the scripts for the next season have already been confirmed. This means that not only do we have plans but there are plans for how the show’s future in terms of a clear direction for the storyline.

There are plans to factor in more narratives based on Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So we could expect to see stuff from Eternals, Shang-Chi and other Phase 4 projects in What If…? season 2 as well. During an interview with Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, Bradley was quoted as saying:

Season 2 is a lot of fun. The training wheels come off, and we get to do a little bit weirder, wilder. There’s one episode which is probably the closest to my own personality I’ve ever written. It’s heartfelt. It’s full of action and bad ‘90s clothing choices.”

The finale of the first season also ends with a possible hint at what might be explored in the future of the series. There is a mystery regarding what might have happened to Steve in Captain Carter’s universe as we see her reminiscing his presence in the finale. But the post-credits scene for the episode gives us a hint at a continuation of this narrative as we discover Steve might make a return. Let’s hope the second season will finally give us one of the storylines where they use wild means to kill Thanos.
