10 Craziest Ways Movies Got Leaked In Hollywood

It’s not easy to keep a secret, especially when it comes to Hollywood. There are a handful of Hollywood celebrities that are exceptionally bad at keeping secrets. At times, it has gone to such severe extents that actors and actresses have literally given the biggest plot twists of the movie. So, here’s a list of the craziest ways movies got leaked.

The Most Insane Movie Leaks Ever

1. Thor: Ragnarok

This one actually tops the list because Mark Ruffalo ended up leaking the movie itself. During an early screening of Thor: Ragnarok, Ruffalo accidentally live-streamed the opening moments of Ragnarok. And that too on his Instagram live! Ruffalo didn’t realize and spoiled the first ten minutes of the movie, which is a lot! Even though the audio was muffled because the phone was in his pants, but people still figure out most of it!

2. Expendables 3

Expendables 3 basically failed at the box office because it was leaked. The parent company Lionsgate puts the blame on it though. However, the movie was leaked online, prior a month its release. It was downloaded over 190,000 times. But within a week it was estimated to be over 2 Million downloads. Of course, this must have had an impact on its box office earning. But the researchers concluded that the weekend competition actually resulted in bad numbers – Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

3. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith

Craziest Ways Movies Got Leaked

The same thing happened with Stars Wars III. It got leaked online by an MGM employee. He was given a copy of the film by his friend who worked in the film’s production. The movie was downloaded online almost 16,000 times before police caught the culprit. Anyhoo, the movie enjoyed its massive box office success. And those who were involved in this scam were all arrested – 8 people were sentenced to three years in prison.

4. Hulk

This is rather a sad story for a massive character like Hulk himself. The 2003 Hulk movie was leaked two weeks before its release. Almost too quickly, the word got out that regarding its mixed reviews. But the movie had a strong opening weekend. However, it was not long after that people realized that they can watch the movie for free. But in reality, it was bad word of mouth. So by the second week, the earning dropped by 70%!

5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises

The movie in itself was a little confusing regarding what the makers want. However, a few months before the release, a cut of the movie was released. Moreover, the cut had footage before any special effects. By the time it was released, the cut was already downloaded 4.5 million times. But the movie still enjoyed its success despite the mediocre reviews by the people who downloaded it online. Still pretty embarrassing for Fox.

6. The Hurt Locker

This is the worst case of piracy on this list. The movie was leaked online five months before its release! The reason for that is the movie was released before its US release in other countries. More than that, the movie was being played in festivals a year before the release. Hence, despite the reputation of the movie, it never became the top 10-weekend box office in the US.

7. Fury

The Interview was a classic case of what happens when you anger the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong Un. The movie was about his planned assassination. So, he hired some hackers who hacked into Sony and leaked the film. But during this process, Fury also got caught in the middle. Even after the leaking, the movie ended up becoming a huge success at the box office, earning thrice the budget of the film.

8. Hateful Eight

Craziest Ways Movies Got Leaked

When we talk about leaks, Hateful Eight did not reach its final stage. The screenplay itself got leaked. Tarantino was so pissed that he gave up the project altogether. After a lot of drama, he realized that the screenplay was leaked by one of the actors themselves. But to intensify the insult, the entire movie was leaked online before its release. So for his next movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Tarantino gave the screenplay only to Dicaprio, Brad Pitt, and Robbie.

9. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

In October of 2019, almost 6 weeks before its release, 2 images leaked from the film’s finale leaked onto Reddit. To prevent this, Disney quickly decided to take these images down. But they were already copied, and Disney’s quick response led the fans to believe that they were in fact real. Later in January 2020, the originals screenplay of director Colin Trevorrow and writing partner Derek Connolly leaked online. But anyhow, the movie made a billion dollars despite the lacking reputation.

10. Deadpool

Deadpool was in the works since 2000 with Reynolds attached to it. But then a string of bad movies (Green Lantern)happened and the movie was shelved aside. However, director Miller convinced Fox to give him money to put together some CGI test footage back in 2012. The footage, however, got leaked online and it spread like a forest fire. The response was so good that Fox resurrected Deadpool, with director Miller and Reynolds as the lead. So at least for one movie, the leak worked in its favor.
