Movies that End on a Cliffhanger:
Cliffhangers are the best way to make a movie memorable but only if it is done correctly, otherwise it can also be catastrophic. The movies on this list are the perfect examples of cliffhangers done right. These movies will make you think for a long time and the fans are still talking about the endings of these movies.
#1: Avengers Infinity War (2018)
All of us were aware that Thanos would leave nothing but wreckage in his wake but none of us expected such a large-scale annihilation. Our beloved heroes were completely defeated at the end of this movie and no one expected it to end on that note. Several Superheroes lost their lives and all of us just sat there in shock after the movie ended.
#2: American Psycho (2000)
American Psycho is a classic movie that depicts the deepest and darkest side of a man. We see Patrick Bateman kill and hurt people for the entire movie but everything changes during the climax. Is Patrick Bateman really a psychopathic serial killer or is he just imagining things? The debate is still on after two decades.
#3: The Dark Knight (2008)
One of the best movies in all history, The Dark Knight is everything a movie lover ever wants to see. Even though ‘the Dark Knight’ defeats the Joker (only technically), the movie ends on an ambiguous note. Now that everyone in Gotham believes Batman to be the villain, none of us at that time knew what the future would be.
#4: The Thing (1982)
This classic horror movie is still celebrated for a lot of reasons, but it is the ending that still gets the fans hyped up. The movie left a lot of unanswered questions that still baffles us. We are still curious about the fate of MacReady and Childs. On top of that, it is even speculated that one of them is the alien. We might never get the answers to these questions.
#5: Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
The entire Star Wars fandom went ballistic after this iconic movie ended on a shocking twist as no one expected a cliff-hanger back then. No one expected Darth Vader to be Luke’s father and on top of that Han Solo’s fate is left in question. The fans had to wait three long years for the conclusion which was like an eternity at that time.
#6: Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie Darko is a brilliant but bizarre movie that can confuse anyone. It has all the elements that make it a mind-bender – Time Travel, Parallel universes, End of the world, and a scary-looking rabbit. The ending of this movie still haunts us as it never shows what truly happens with Donnie. We still do not know if he managed to save the world or not.
#7: The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Back in 2003, the Wachowski’s had no plans for a fourth movie, and to end such an iconic trilogy on a shocking cliff-hanger was a gutsy move, to say the least. The fans still wonder if the war between mankind and the machines is over but the thing that bugs us the most is the fate of Neo. We can’t wait to see how they’ll tie this story with the fourth installment.
#8: Blade Runner (Director’s Cut) (1982)
Blade Runner is a very tragic movie in all aspects if one dives deep into the story. The Director’s cut is even grimier than the original movie and it changes the ending entirely. The ending practically questions everything, and it even suggests that Deckard might be a replicant himself. We also waiting to know about the fate of Rachel.
#9: Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003)
Quentin Tarantino initially planned to make a four-hour-long movie but when that didn’t pan out, he decided to end the first movie on a cliff-hanger. His decision worked wonders as the fans weren’t able to control themselves after the first movie. The reveal that the Bride’s daughter is still alive was the perfect way to set up the amazing sequel.
#10: Inception (2010)
We do not think there is any other movie that can match the intensity of Inception when it comes to cliff-hangers. Fans still get into heated debates about the last scene of this movie. Is he still living in the dream world? Did Cobb’s totem topple at the end? We still do not know and it is going to eat us alive one day.
