How Captain America Was Able to Hold Thanos Back in Avengers: Infinity War

How Captain America Was Able to Hold Thanos?

Captain America vs Thanos was surely the best fight in Avengers: Endgame. In fact, it was arguably superior to every Thanos vs. an Individual Avenger battle. Iron Man vs. Thanos, Doctor Strange vs. Thanos, Hulk vs. Thanos & Thor vs. Thanos were all awesome, but none of those fights inflicted more screams than Captain America. Cap was standing tall when no one else was. He is the out of all other heroes mentioned above, and yet he almost took out Thanos by proving himself worthy. We didn’t get this battle in Avengers: Infinity War as it was only teased. And yet, it was because of that tease that we were so surprised and satisfied when Captain America vs. Thanos finally happened in Avengers: Endgame.

In Infinity War, the encounter between Cap & Thanos was short, but it was still quite powerful. It showed us how powerful Thanos really was as Captain America only had a fraction of his strength. But it also showed us how far Cap is willing to go in order to do the right thing. He knows his limits and yet he is willing to take on opponents much stronger than him. He took on Loki, Ultron & Thanos. He fell, but he got back up. And his will is what surprised Thanos the most in Infinity War. Cap only got 3 little moments of glory in Infinity War. One of them was him holding off Thanos for a short while. And the reaction of Thanos was priceless.

He was not expecting someone like Captain America to actually resist as much as he did. He was taken by surprise, but this surprise wasn’t at his strength, it was due to the strong will of Steve Rogers. Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame co-writer Christopher Markus was asked about this & he told The Hollywood Reporter:

“I think in that moment, Thanos is impressed by Steve’s will. He’s like, ‘I can’t believe this guy who apparently has no powers is trying this.’ He’s almost like, ‘Really? Really?'”

This little confrontation made us realize how weak Captain America was against Thanos, and that is why his battle against Thanos in the next movie was all the more special. Captain America is known to have the strongest will. His will, selflessness & righteousness is why he turned out to be worthy. And this is also why he would’ve been chosen to become a Green Lantern if he were in the DC Universe. He had the power of the Gods even when he was a little guy from Brooklyn. Everything special about him didn’t just come of a bottle. But yes, the serum did result in the enhancement. Good became great.

That’s why we should be happy for the journey that Captain America had in the MCU. He started off as a strong-willed, but a powerful little guy. When he got strength, he never misused it. He knew the true value of it. Even when he found out that he could lift Thor’s hammer, he didn’t show it off. He gave up and pretended that he cannot lift it until it was truly necessary.

Cap was always ready to make the hardest of choices. Remember what Doctor Strange said? “The hardest choices require the strongest wills.” He found out about Tony’s parents but he didn’t tell his friend to spare him the pain. It was not to protect Bucky. Cap just couldn’t see his friend in pain. And even when he realized that he was wrong at what he did, he accepted it and was ready to go back home if Tony would accept him.

One could find 100 reasons to love Captain America more than anyone else. And we’re glad that he finally got to live the life fate took away from him. He got the chance to live with the woman he loved, and he took it.
