Henry Cavill Back as Superman:
Just as Ben Affleck’s Batman, news reports broke out that Henry Cavill was also out as Superman. There was a contractual dispute between Cavill & WB, as the home of DC was not willing to pay a lot for Cavill to return as Superman. So, Cavill was always skating on thin ice. But unlike Affleck’s situation, Cavill never confirmed that he was out as Superman. In fact, he always said that he has more to give to the character. Ben Affleck on the other hand confirmed that he isn’t Batman anymore, and later we got the news that Robert Pattinson will be the Batman in a new solo movie.
And now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League has brought us the news we’ve been wanting to hear for over 2 and a half years, another great news update has followed it. It has now been confirmed that not only will we get more from Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but we’d also get to see him in multiple DCEU movies after it. According to reports, Cavill has signed a multiple movie contract where he will have appearances like Nick Fury & the Hulk.
Cavill is now down to do multiple cameos & supporting roles in upcoming movies. But as far as Man of Steel 2, that is still a no go. Although, that could change in the next 5 years as Cavill continues to have more and more appearances. It is clear that WB still feels cold feet while investing in a solo Superman movie because never has a Superman movie been extremely profitable for them ever since Superman 1 hit the theatres back in 1978.
But it is still a great idea to keep Superman around and use him in small doses. People hated the fact that his face was turned into a mushed potato in Justice League & his head was cut off in Shazam!. Well, both of those things are being fixed now. We will see the greatness of Cavill’s Superman in Justice League and this new contract certainly will have him appear in the upcoming Shazam! Movies.
It is clear that the plan is to mostly use Superman-like Captain Marvel was used in Avengers: Endgame and the Hulk has been used in multiple Marvel movies. Someone that has the power of Superman could be used extremely well in moments that require a paradigm shift in the stories. So, Superman could either come in for mentoring roles, be used as a battering ram to help save the day, or he could be used as a punching bag to make the other heroes feel special. Whatever it is, we’re happy that Henry Cavill is getting more to do as Superman.
WB was working on a Supergirl movie with writer Oren Uziel, and that’s where Superman would’ve definitely appeared. But last month, we got the update that the Studio is now shifting their focus on Superman again. Apart from that, we’re pretty sure that Sups will definitely appear in the Shazam! franchise. He could have a cameo in Shazam! 2 & might help Shazam take down Black Adam in the third film. Or, he could actually oppose Black Adam in the second film of that franchise. Wonder Woman 3, Aquaman 2, The Flash & Green Lantern are the films where Henry Cavill could also cameo or play supporting roles.
But the anticipation that we really have for Superman is that he would get to be a part of Justice League 2. If Zack Snyder’s Justice League turns out to be a success, then, a sequel to that could take place on HBO Max itself. And that’s where Superman will be back to lead the team against Darkseid. We’d like to think that all of these Superman supporting roles and cameos are to bridge the gap till we get Man of Steel 2. Let’s see what happens.
Here’s what Cavill said in the past when he said that he’s still willing to return as Superman:
“Where we left off with Man of Steel, in particular, was the guy who had found his place, or was trying to find his place but had sort of found it by the end, that had committed something which he would consider a most horrific sin by killing the last member of his species. That is a place where I would like to travel from with the character. Him exploring the positivity of who he is. Not necessarily the chocolate box version, but the leaning into that. That character who becomes an icon of hope and enjoying that experience rather than necessarily being made uncomfortable by it.”
