Guardians Vol. 3 is at least 3 years away from us if not more. Ever since James Gunn got fired, Marvel has been focusing upon other projects as they had put Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on an indefinite hold. The ideal thing for Marvel to do right now is signing a new director for the project who can come in and start working on the project till the time Marvel wishes to release the film, but that certainly isn’t the case.
For now, it is unclear what Marvel plans to do after Avengers: Endgame. As far as we know, the closest movies to be produced are Black Widow and The Eternals, and many people have reported that Marvel is also going to produce a Shang Chi movie as soon as possible. Here’s what Kevin Feige told us about the plans post-Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home:
“As we’ve been doing for years, we aren’t going to announce anything post Avengers: Endgame or Spider-Man [Far From Home] until post Endgame and Spider-Man. As you know as a fan, there’s a tremendous amount of potential and a tremendous amount of additional characters and storylines and groups of characters that we’re going to keep playing with. And again, that’s a testament to Marvel and to the amount of storylines and characters and amazing, amazing runs that have been in the Marvel comics.”
But we don’t know how far exactly Marvel has pushed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If the James Gunn would have still been around then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would have already begun production by now, and it would have been scheduled to release on May 1, 2020. But that isn’t happening.
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air.
Obviously, I think it’s a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in — and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can’t be easy. But I know that they plan on making the movie. I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, ‘Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We’re just not sure when yet.'”
Now, Feige has also confirmed that as he recently spoke to Collider and gave us an update upon the release date of this film. Here’s what he said:
“I mean, when it was pushed back, it was pushed back. Meaning the release date, because it’s not coming out—although we’ve never announced a release date actually, but it was gonna happen sooner rather than later, initially of course. Outside of knowing that we’re gonna use [James Gunn’s] draft, [we have] been focusing on other projects.”
Last year, there was a report which suggested that Marvel is planning to begin production upon Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by 2021, so they could release it on the May release date scheduled for 2022. While it would make sense for them to do that, no one has officially confirmed this.
All the actors have stood in support of James Gunn ever since he was fired, and the entire world wants to bring him back, except Disney. Now what’s done is done. Perhaps we can expect a new directorial announcement later this year or in 2020. Let’s hope for the best.
