Kevin Feige Confirms The Eternals to be Set Tens of Thousands of Years in MCU’s Past

The Marvel Cinematic Universe going to take some big strides once Avengers: Endgame is done. Their future plans are still vague as we only know that they are willing to continue the same formula, i.e. solo films and ensembles set on Earth, in the cosmos, and certain MCU prequels. Talking about prequels, 2020 is going to be dedicated to them as the year starts with Black Widow, which is a prequel to Iron Man, and then comes the ultimate prequel, i.e. The Eternals.

This is a film that will probably be what Guardians of the Galaxy turned out for us. Most of the general audiences don’t know what to expect from the film, and the same happened when James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy came out. It turned out to be a blast as people loved how the film opened the cosmic areas of Marvel. Then the sequel and Thor: Ragnarok expanded that even further.

Now Eternals is going to have the same colorful and vibrant vibe that comes from the Jack Kirby comic-inspired movies. Thor: Ragnarok was so blingy and amazing, and we could expect something like that from The Eternals. The plans beyond 2020 are not yet known to us, and Kevin Feige recently said that Marvel has things sorted for the next 5-6 years, so we will get to know of what’s coming next once we are done with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Here’s what Feige told Collider:

“Everything after [Avengers] Endgame, and after Spider-Man: Far From Home, will be different and be unique, as we try to make every film. But seeing returning characters is certainly something we’re gonna do and want to do. But also introducing characters that the majority of the world has never heard of, much like Guardians [of the Galaxy], much like Avengers before we made Avengers. And there are lots of them.”

He then gave us an insight upon Eternals, and what we could expect from the film.

“Eternals are one group, but we like the idea of introducing an ensemble, doing an ensemble movie from the start, as opposed to building up as we did with the first Avengers. More like Guardians, not tonally, but in terms of introducing a new group of people.

You were asking about ’60s, and ’70s before. Jack Kirby did an immense, amazing epic with Eternals that spans tens of thousands of years, and that’s also something we haven’t really done, which is why that among many other things post-Endgame, we find appealing.”

As Feige claimed, the movie will not be tonally similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, so don’t really expect certain songs and everything to be playing every now and then, and certain quips be offered after every line they speak. Quips are a thing of Marvel so they won’t be completely absent from The Eternals, but we can expect a serious tone from this ensemble film as compared to others. This film will dive into the deep history of the MCU and retcon with stuff from the present, like Captain Marvel, but on a smaller scale.

So many cosmic connections could be established, especially to the likes of Thanos. So there’s a lot of greatness that we can expect from this film. Directed by Chloe Zhao and from a script of Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals will begin production later this year on August 1.

Here’s the official synopsis of the project which will supposedly release on November 6:

“The story of ‘THE ETERNALS’ is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
