Last year was a great year for the movies. Many were already anticipated to be big hits and many became box-office surprises of 2018 and that is what we will talk about in this article. The names in the list are quite interesting as several movies were predicted by a lot of critics to be bad but they turned out to be huge hits. So, without wasting any more time talking, we are going to bring on our list.
10. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle:
Well, we have to say that no one out there predicted the success this movie achieved in 2018 as we all know that there were doubts about the story and the stars despite the name of Dwayne Johnson attached to this film. The hype of the film wasn’t much but the trailer eventually rose the bar as the visuals looked very appealing. The movie did a business of $962 million and was the fifth highest grossing movie of 2017 but it was January of 2018 when the movie made a spot in the list and a name for itself.
9. The Nun:
The Nun has officially been the highest-grossing movie in the ‘New Line’s Conjuring Universe’ as it succeeds in collecting a record-breaking sum of $330M worldwide by beating the previous record of $320M set by ‘The Conjuring 2’. It’s simply incredible to realize that it cost just $22M to make this film which has now crossed and has broken all the records with it astonishing earning of $330M and is cruising towards a superb profit of over $100M. Franchise’s last year release, Annabelle: Creation had also earned a whopping $305.6M from their ticket sales and earned a profit of $108.7M and despite having a bill of production of $115M.
On September 30, 2018, The Nun already grossed $109 million in the United States and Canada, and $221 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $330 million against a population budget of $22 million. It made $22.4 million on its first day, including $5.4 million from Thursday night previews, both the highest such numbers for The Conjuring films. It went on to debut to $53.8 million, also making the best figure of the franchise, and became the first film in almost a month to finish ahead of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ at the box office.
8. Black Panther:
The unexpected blockbuster Black Panther went on to earn a sum of $81.1 million. The surprise package of the year Black Panther had already generated a lot of curiosity in the minds and hearts of people even before its release. And after its release, everyone was talking about the Black Panther costume and also all the technological things they’ve shown in the movie but no one anticipated it to be this successful.
Black Panther isn’t just the most googled movie of the year but also the movie which grabbed the sixth place in the list of top 10 United States searches of 2018. The movie collected a lot of money along with some big awards and also got nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards which includes Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
Black Panther won two big awards at African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) one, the Best Film of 2018 award and second, Ryan Coogler won the Best Director Award. The movie has also received a Golden Globe Nomination and has also been titled as one of the best movies of 2018 by ‘The American Film Institute’.
6 & 7. Skyscraper And Rampage:
We all know that just a big star name doesn’t always work in the film industry nowadays as the audience has become very demanding and aware. The days when they used to go to the theaters only by seeing the name of the director or actor have been long gone. The same thing we saw with Dwayne Johnson as his both movies Rampage and Skyscraper couldn’t match the total of his January blockbuster Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.
This clearly tells us about that star-power isn’t the only thing which viewers get tempted by nowadays. The movie Skyscraper made a sum of $304.1 million worldwide against a budget of $125 million. Whereas, Rampage collected a sum of $428 million against a budget of $140 million. So my boy, star power doesn’t always work!
5. Crazy Rich Asians:
The movie is based on the novel by famous writer Kevin Kwan. It is directed by Jon M. Chu and made a sum of $238 million worldwide. The movie was appreciated by a lot of people and critics from different parts of the world. It was a dominating entry in the month of August which also beat movies like Mile 22 and out-grossed some big names like Ready Player One and The Meg. The sequel of the movie is in works and you simply can’t take the Asian film industry lightly now as Marvel is also working towards the incoming of Shang-Chi, who is a Master of Kung-Fu and is the only renowned Asian Superhero.
4. Incredibles 2 Did Something Incredible:
The movie was directed by Brad Bird and has been a tremendous success at the box office, if we take a look towards the success of the first film ‘The Incredibles’, then we find that the movie collected a sum of $633 million worldwide in total in comparison of the budget of $92 million. The movie won two Academy Awards and also the prestigious Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. It was the first full-animated movie in order to win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.
The sequel of the movie turned out to be an even more successful and interesting than the first one as it managed to earn a sum of $1.2 billion worldwide, which made it the fourth-highest grossing film of 2018. Also, the second highest-grossing animated movie and the 16th highest-grossing movie of all-time. The movie also became the highest-grossing animated film domestically and became the fastest animated movie to gross the title of $1 billion.
3. Solo: A Star Wars Story:
Solo was the disaster of the year in many people’s eyes as there were a lot of expectations with this movie because it was a Star Wars movie and we all know how good this franchise is in breaking box-office records but this movie came as a shocker as it just earned a sum of $392.9 million worldwide. When you witness that a Star Wars movie has earned lower than Dwayne Johnson’s one of the most under-performing movies Rampage, then, I don’t think I have much to say about the kind of disappointment this movie was.
2. Mission: Impossible Fallout:
Mission Impossible – Fallout is surely the best entry in the franchise, and it took everyone by a storm. This movie has got the highest ratings and reviews as it has a 9.2 IMDb and 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. It was even huge on the Box Office and broke all of the previous franchise records with the movie making $61.5 Million in just 3 days at the US Box office for the first weekend. In all the weekends that the movie has been out till now, there has never been more than a 50% drop at the domestic Box Office.
Comparing its 24 day total with Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation at the Domestic Box Office, Fallout was in the lead. Mission: Impossible – Fallout stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin, Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby.
Sony is swimming in the pile of money that has been enabled largely by China! Venom had a budget of just $100 Million which is why it turned out to be one of the most profitable Superhero films of all time with the earnings of $852.8 Million at the worldwide Box Office. It hasn’t just beaten single films, but also major franchises in Hollywood.
The movie beat these MCU films and we are sure that Marvel fans won’t be very happy to read this Box Office: The Incredible Hulk ($263.4 Million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($370.5 Million), Thor ($449.3 Million), Ant-Man ($519.3 Million), Iron Man ($585.1 Million), Ant-Man and the Wasp ($622 Million), Iron Man 2 ($623.9 Million), Thor: The Dark World ($644.5 Million), Doctor Strange ($677.7 Million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714.2 Million), Guardians of the Galaxy ($773.3 Million).
