At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we all know that Thanos was successful and half the population of the entire Universe ceased to exist. This was the first time a major villain had emerged victorious and the Avengers lost. But the reason why the Avengers lost was that they actually battled Thanos from two fronts being divided from the core! The battle mainly took place on Titan and Wakanda. The heroes in Wakanda had to fight off against the Outriders, 3/4th of the Black Order & Thanos himself while the heroes on Titan took on Thanos at first.
Both the teams of the Superheroes almost had things in control but as one member from both the groups made the big screw up, Thanos stole the victory from both of locations. Star-Lord could not hold his nerves for just one second while Thor didn’t go for the head.
This caused the disintegration of half the heroes. There were quite a few Avengers left alive in Wakanda but only 2 people survived on Titan, who was Tony and Nebula.
Infinity War showed us a pretty empathic side of Nebula but the film obviously did not give her enough time to bond with anyone. She and Gamora had already become the loving sisters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, but Infinity War had to portray so many characters that Nebula did not get a lot of screen time.
Now that half the heroes are dusted, her role in the next film might be increased but obviously, we should not expect her to be the MVP.
Still, we could expect that she might be able to establish somewhat of a friendship with Tony Stark as those were the only 2 individuals who are alive and are supposed to make the long trip back to Earth. They have the Milano on Titan which the Guardians have left behind so that would be their ticket home.
Karen Gillan revealed in an interview in the previous year that she is going to have an unexpected BFF before Infinity War came out. Here’s what she said:
“I know who her new BFF is. And I can’t tell you. I can’t. I promise you it’s brilliant and unexpected and just so good…I don’t know about any frenemies. She is on a clear mission, as everybody is, to deal with someone with a glove, and I think that is the most important issue. So I think people are grouping together to take care of this task.”
Before Infinity War, no one could have expected that her and Tony might become close friends so that is supposed to be the brilliant and unexpected feat Gillan was talking about. After having seen Infinity War, that is the only thing that makes sense.
Tony will also be quite intrigued about her as she is a Cyborg with so many different parts and Tony himself is the Mechanic! So to consider a strong friendship between the two characters, here’s a fan art that shows Tony repairing Nebula:
It will be really amazing to see how Tony and Nebula would make their way back to Earth, but recent reports have suggested that Avengers 4 will begin after a time jump of 5 years. That means Tony would already be on Earth and his friendship with Nebula will have to be implied as it would have already prospered.
We might get to see a bit of it through flashbacks but who really knows what is truly going to happen in Avengers 4 apart from the creatives of the film.
Here’s what the writers of the film had to say about the unexpectedness of Avengers 4:
“Christopher Markus – [Avengers 4] doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is…Also…[the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.
Stephen McFeely – Put it this way, I think [Infinity War] is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.”
Avengers 4 comes out on May 3, 2019.
