Mario Movie Cast: 17 Voice Actors and Characters They Will Play

If you’re curious about the actors and characters in The Super Mario Bros. movie, we’ve got you covered. Despite receiving mixed reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has still managed to please some fans. When it comes to bringing the world of Mario to life on the big screen, the options for characters are plentiful. So who made the cut in this latest adaptation? Here is the list of the Mario movie cast:

It’s clear that the filmmakers behind The Super Mario Bros. movie have chosen a talented and diverse cast to bring these beloved characters to life. Whether or not the movie will live up to the expectations of die-hard Mario fans remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure – there’s no shortage of recognizable faces in this star-studded cast.

Chris Pratt – Mario

Love him or hate him, Chris Pratt is the voice behind the iconic plumber Mario in Universal’s new animated film. Known for his roles in other franchises like Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, Pratt is no stranger to being a part of big-budget movies. Despite some initial skepticism from fans about his casting, many have been pleasantly surprised by his performance as Mario.

Charlie Day – Luigi

Charlie Day’s portrayal of Luigi in the Super Mario Bros. movie has left some fans disappointed, as he spends most of the film in a cage, with only a few scenes where he gets to show his acting chops. However, it is clear that he makes the most of the screen time he does have, as he manages to make the character both endearing and humorous. Fans are still hoping to see more of Day’s Luigi, and rumors are swirling that Universal is considering a spinoff based on the popular Luigi’s Mansion game series. If that comes to fruition, it would be a chance for Day to shine in a more substantial role, and hopefully win over any remaining skeptics.

Jack Black – Bowser

Jack Black portrays the classic Nintendo antagonist Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. movie. Black appeared to enjoy the role, bringing Bowser to life in his own unique way. Interestingly, despite being one of the franchise’s most famous villains, Bowser only shares the screen with Mario in the final sequence of the film, where they engage in an epic battle. Prior to that, Bowser is primarily seen with his Koopa soldiers or operating on his own.

Keegan-Michael Key – Toad

Toad is brought to life in the Super Mario Bros. movie by Keegan-Michael Key. His upbeat and cheerful personality makes him the perfect fit for the role of the happy-go-lucky character who joins Mario and Peach on their journey through the various kingdoms. Although Toad doesn’t have a significant role in the film and doesn’t get to do much (even less than Luigi), he is the first character to greet Mario when he arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Anya Taylor-Joy – Princess Peach

Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. movie is a refreshing take on the character, as she’s not just a helpless damsel in distress waiting for Mario to save her. Instead, she’s a strong and capable adventurer who fights alongside Mario and Luigi in their quest to save the Mushroom Kingdom. While some fans may be disappointed that Peach doesn’t fit the classic Mario trope of being kidnapped by Bowser at the start of the story, Taylor-Joy’s performance is still sure to win over audiences with her wit and charm.

Seth Rogen – Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong is a significant character in the movie, as he aids Princess Peach in her fight against Bowser. He even engages in a one-on-one battle with Mario that’s reminiscent of Super Smash Bros. Seth Rogen’s voice work for Donkey Kong isn’t particularly distinct, but it suits the character and the movie’s overall tone.

Fred Armisen – Cranky Kong

Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong’s father, plays a key role in the Super Mario Bros. movie as a paternal figure to many of the iconic character’s extended family. While he isn’t a prominent figure in many Mario games, he has remained a consistent part of the Donkey Kong series. Fred Armisen’s performance as Cranky in the movie was well-received and he nailed the character’s gruff and cantankerous personality.

Sebastian Maniscalco – Spike

Sebastian Maniscalco lends his voice to Foreman Spike, an obscure character from the Wrecking Crew video game released in 1985. In the game, Spike’s job was to make it difficult for players to make progress as Mario and/or Luigi. While the character doesn’t appear much in the movie, Maniscalco’s portrayal stays true to the original character, even though he doesn’t hinder Mario and Luigi as much as he annoys them.

Kevin Michael Richardson – Kamek

Kamek, played by Kevin Michael Richardson, serves as Jack Black’s Bowser’s loyal and obedient Koopa Wizard. He never dares to question his boss and is always by his side. Throughout the movie, Kamek appears content working for Bowser and even gets to participate in a scheme to pretend to marry him while dressed as Princess Peach. Richardson’s portrayal is fitting for the character’s personality and relationship with Bowser.

Charles Martinet – Mario’s Dad/Giuseppe

Charles Martinet, the voice actor for Mario, also portrays a couple of characters in The Super Mario Bros. movie. In addition to being the voice of Papa Mario, Mario’s father, he also voices Giuseppe, who does Mario impressions by the arcade cabinet in the Punch-Out Pizza restaurant. While Mario’s family doesn’t make frequent appearances in the franchise, they do exist, and Martinet gets to bring Papa Mario to life in the film. Interestingly, Papa Mario’s first appearance in the franchise was actually in a short anime video released in Japan in 1989.

Jessica DiCicco – Mario’s Mom

DiCicco, who has lent her voice to a number of popular animated series, including Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and The Owl House, takes on the role of Mama Mario in the Super Mario Bros. movie. Although the character doesn’t have a large role in the film, it’s still a notable project for the actress due to the popularity of the Mario franchise. DiCicco is known for her voice acting work in a variety of animated series and films, with roles ranging from young characters to more mature ones. With her extensive experience in the industry, it’s no surprise that she was chosen to voice Mama Mario in the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of the iconic video game franchise.

Rino Romano – Uncle Tony

In The Super Mario Bros. movie, Uncle Tony is a new addition to Mario’s family and doesn’t appear in any other past Mario projects. The character is voiced by actor Rino Romano. Although he doesn’t have a significant role, he does get the chance to expand the family dinner table. Romano is known for voicing Darth Revan in the popular 2003 game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and also worked as the narrator for the animated Curious George series for 15 years.

John DiMaggio – Uncle Arthur

Another new character introduced in The Super Mario Bros. movie is Uncle Arthur, who is voiced by John DiMaggio. Although the character has a small role, DiMaggio is a well-known voice actor, having lent his voice to many popular characters such as Bender in Futurama, Jake in Adventure Time, and King Zøg in Disenchantment, among others. Up next, DiMaggio will be voicing Stratosphere in the upcoming film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts set to release on June 9.

Khary Payton – Penguin King

Khary Payton is the voice behind the Penguin King in The Super Mario Bros. movie, although the character doesn’t get much screen time beyond being locked up in a cage. Despite the small role, Payton has an extensive resume, having voiced notable characters like Cyborg in Teen Titans for over 400 episodes. He’s also known for his live-action roles, including King Ezekiel in The Walking Dead.

Juliet Jelenic – Lumalee

Michael Jelenic’s daughter Juliet has a role in The Super Mario Bros. movie, voicing Lumalee. This character is a source of joy and hope for the other characters, keeping their spirits up even when they’re imprisoned above lava in Bowser’s lair. Jelenic’s performance as Lumalee provides some of the movie’s funniest moments.

Scott Menville – Koopa General

Scott Menville, known for his voice role as Robin in Teen Titans, brings to life the Koopa responsible for the infamous Blue Shell in The Super Mario Bros. movie. The character can be seen restraining the Penguin King at the start of the film, and is also one of the key Koopas chasing down the heroes on Rainbow Road.

Eric Bauza – Koopa Troopa Soldiers

Eric Bauza provides the voices for the many Koopa Troopa soldiers in the movie, adding to his already impressive resume. He has lent his voice to various projects, including Hulu’s The Mighty Ones, YouTube’s Woody Woodpecker, Cartoonito’s Bugs Bunny Builders, and many more.

Despite some fans wishing for Charles Martinet’s original Mario voice, it’s important to recognize the differences between live-action acting and voice-over roles. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of opportunities for more characters to appear in potential sequels. Wario, Princess Daisy, Waluigi, and Bowser Jr. are all directly connected to Mario and are likely to appear if Universal greenlights more installments. Meanwhile, popular characters like Link or Kirby could also be introduced, as well as other members of Donkey Kong’s family such as Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong.

It seems like there are endless possibilities for the series to expand, and it will be exciting to see what Universal comes up with in the future. For now, fans can catch The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters worldwide.
