James Gunn Reveals 8 New DC Actors For The Rebooted DC Universe
For the upcoming animated series Creature Commandos, co-lead of DC Studio James Gunn has revealed the casting of eight new characters. Frank Grillo, who will play Rick Flag Sr., was the first actor whose casting was confirmed. among the series. In two different Instagram stories, Grillo had previously made hints about his participation in the new DC Universe. And now James Gunn has announced 8 new DC actors.
In addition to Grillo, seven other actors have been chosen for the series, which will be the first endeavor in the upcoming reboot of the DC Universe. It is anticipated that these new cast members will eventually bring their characters to life in live-action adventures in addition to providing the voices for them in animation.
Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
Frank Grillo is set to play Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming DCU reboot, which will feature Creature Commandos as the first project. The character has a history with The Suicide Squad in the comics and is likely to lead the Creature Commandos in both the animated series and live-action crossovers in the future. Grillo’s new role in the DCU is an exciting opportunity for the actor, especially compared to his time as Crossbones in the MCU. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how Grillo will bring Rick Flag Sr. to life and how the character will fit into the larger DCU.
David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein
David Harbour, who recently joined the MCU as Red Guardian, has taken on another role in the upcoming Frankenstein film adaptation. The character, named Frankenstein, is based on the iconic literary character and has origins that are rooted in the horror genre. Harbour’s new role is a departure from his recent superhero gig, but it’s easy to see how the actor would enjoy playing such an iconic role.
Indira Varma as the Bride
Indira Varma, known for her role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, is set to play the Bride in an upcoming project. The Bride was created in the Frankenstein story to be a companion for the monster, but her own ambitions and desires set her on a different path. Varma becoming one of the new DC actors is sure to bring an exciting and unique portrayal of the iconic character to life on screen.
Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorous
Alan Tudyk will voice Dr. Phosphorus, a radioactive supervillain and key member of the Creature Commandos, in the upcoming DCU animated series. While often associated with Batman, Dr. Phosphorus’ origins are tied to his exposure to a reactor core, resulting in his body burning like an eternal flame.
Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic
Maria Bakalova, who recently appeared as Cosmo in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, will have a bigger role in the upcoming Vol. 3, as well as an entirely original role in the form of Princess Ilana Rostovic. Details about her character are scarce, but her growing presence in the MCU suggests that she is poised to become a major player in future projects.
Sean Gunn as both GI Robot & Weasel
In the upcoming Creature Commandos series, James Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn is also among new DC actors and will be pulling double duty as both Weasel from The Suicide Squad and GI Robot. While GI Robot may draw comparisons to Doom Patrol’s Robotman, the two are different characters. In the series, GI Robot is a unique creation designed for dangerous and unusual missions, much like the ones that the Creature Commandos take on.
Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky
Zoe Chao will portray Nina Mazursky, a SHADE scientist who created the initial version of the Creature Commandos. Despite her first attempt being a failure, she went on to create a second iteration of the team, ultimately leading to the main cast of the upcoming animated series. As part of these experiments, Mazursky transformed into an amphibian woman.
Steve Agee as the returning John Economos
Steve Agee will be reprising his role as agent John Economos in the DCU, after previously appearing in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, as well as having a cameo in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Although he played a significant role in the Peacemaker series, he will not be returning as King Shark, a character he voiced in the aforementioned movies and TV show.
Although it may seem odd that the first DCU project out the door is Creature Commandos, it is undeniable that James Gunn has assembled a talented and impressive cast. With production already underway, it seems likely that the animated series will be a hit with audiences. Furthermore, given that all the actors have experience in live-action, it should be a smooth transition for them to appear in the DCU’s live-action projects. It remains to be seen which project the actors will transition into after the animated series, but Swamp Thing seems like the most likely candidate.
It has also been confirmed that someone from the Creature Commandos will appear in Waller, an HBO Max series. Additionally, there is the possibility that the team of misfits will be involved in a big culminating event for the DCU’s Chapter 1, perhaps alongside the Justice League themselves. Despite the unknowns, it is clear that James Gunn has big plans for the Creature Commandos, and their impressive cast promises to bring them to life in a dynamic and engaging way. Fans will have to wait until 2024 to see them in action, but with such a talented group of actors on board, it seems likely that the wait will be worth it.
