James Gunn Responds to Criticism of Promoting Marvel
DC Studios Head, James Gunn has been getting criticism for promoting the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Even though this isn’t exactly new territory for him since he has previously worked on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker for the DCU before taking on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film, it has still created some tension. Warner Bros hired Gunn and Peter Safran to oversee the new DC Studios back in October 2022, and since then, they have been working hard to create the first chapter of the new DCU.
At the same time, Gunn has been promoting The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ while completing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, a fan recently called out Gunn for promoting the competition, and it has raised some concerns about his loyalty. The fan posted a comment on Gunn’s Instagram post featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast, saying that it was “unbelievable” for DC to hire someone who advertises their competition and that it was a disaster waiting to happen.
Gunn responded to the criticism, taking a different position concerning loyalty, and saying that the last thing DC wants is someone who would “turn his back on the last movie he created.” He also noted that his commitment to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was something DC knew about ahead of time. Gunn is known for being an accessible creator on social media, and he often takes to Twitter or Instagram to update fans on projects’ progress, debunk rumors and false information, and engage with fans.
Even though this latest interaction wasn’t exactly news or an announcement, it revealed one of the reasons why DC Studios is in good hands. Gunn’s declaration that his loyalty is to his obligations and colleagues rather than to a brand or logo demonstrates how much he appreciates his work and the people he collaborates with. This kind of attitude is what the comic book community needs and it may encourage up-and-coming talent to collaborate with the head of DC Studios in the future.
James Gunn has balanced his responsibilities to Marvel and DC, but he has remained committed to and focused on each project. He has even gone so far as to suggest that he is unconcerned by the rivalry between Marvel and DC since he sees both companies as partners in the pursuit of great superhero films. Despite the criticism and questions about his allegiance, Gunn is a highly regarded filmmaker in the business and possesses the talent and imagination to produce fantastic movies for both Marvel and DC. On May 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theatres, and it will be intriguing to watch how his collaboration with DC will influence his upcoming endeavors.
