The Ending of Eternals Has Turned Into a Big Plot Hole

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been growing at a bombastic pace. With the end of the Infinity Saga and the advent of Phase IV, things have escalated quickly. It was only a year and a half ago when we were introduced to the concept of the multiverse in the MCU, and now it has become an everyday occurrence in this universe. You see, Marvel Studios wanted to phase in the multiverse over two years but because of the pandemic, they had to stuff a lot of content into 2021. Eternals was probably one of the most anticipated releases of Phase 4 because it introduced an entire cast of superheroes. However, the ending of Eternals was not something that we expected.

The movie started off with an introduction to this oldest superhero team in the MCU. It is amazing how Marvel can retcon their own stories time and again. MCU started off as a place where science reigned supreme and everything, even the Gods, were explained as advanced scientific beings. But now that Phase 4 has rolled around, Marvel wants us to believe that magic was already a part of their world. Not only that, but they also want us to believe that eternal cosmic beings have been a part of this universe for a long time and they have been directed by God-like cosmic power engines known as The Celestials. Their powers, for all intents and purposes, are akin to magic, yet Marvel refuses to acknowledge that. Just like how they refuse to acknowledge the ending of this movie in their Phase 4 content.

Ending of Eternal Created A Big Plot Hole

Phase IV started with a blast and things reached a melting point in Eternals. The promotional material for the movie promised to deliver one of the most important conflicts of this era. An emergence was coming and we were at the epicenter of a cosmic level explosion. At the end of Eternals, the earth was ripped open. It was revealed that the emergence meant the destruction of Earth and the birth of a new Celestial. This was a scary revelation and the Eternals had a civil war between themselves over it.

Finally, Phastos used the uni-mind bracelets to collect all of the Eternals’ cosmic power and Sersi used it to kill the Celestial Tiamut. She basically turned Tiamut into a big rock. After this climactic battle, Arishem appeared in the sky and took Sersi away. We loved the ending of Eternals but the thing is that the cataclysmic events that happened should have been addressed in subsequent movies. The very fact that no one in the Marvel universe has even mentioned the appearance of a big monster in the night sky, or the emergence of Tiamut from the sea, in itself is a colossal continuity issue in the MCU.

MCU is an interconnected web of stories. It is famous for the fact that every story and piece of content we see from the studio exists in the same universe. They are all happening simultaneously and they interact with each other in satisfying ways. This approach rewards the inquisitive viewers for noticing things sooner than others. So it becomes very frustrating when such big events are blatantly ignored. It almost feels like a betrayal of the fans’ trust.

The Future

Moreover, there is also a clear “devil-may-care” attitude in the latest Marvel content. The reason for that seems to be quick directorial changes between projects. We can’t help but think that Marvel either may not care about the continuity issues or is planning something so big that we can’t grasp or fathom what is coming. It makes sense that there won’t be a quick response to the Tiamut threat since the Avengers are all but gone, but Doctor Strange is still here and it is his responsibility to watch out for supernatural threats.

A giant Celestial appearing in the sky seems pretty supernatural to me. Why Multiverse of Madness does not make any reference to that, is beyond my understanding.
