Benedict Cumberbatch Explains Why Doctor Strange Is Not An Avenger

Doctor Strange is quite a fresh face in the Marvel Cinematic Universe compared to the other names in the franchise. But the character has managed to prove his importance by being present during some of the most important events. There is a lot of wonder regarding the future of the character as he is going to get his first sequel to his solo venture later this year. Since the character was present during all the essential events involving the Marvel heroes, fans have assumed that he is a part of the Avengers in the franchise. Benedict Cumberbatch recently explained why Doctor Strange is not an Avenger despite battling Thanos twice along with the other Avengers.

Avengers: Endgame Iron Man Doctor Strange

The character made his debut in the MCU with his solo venture which ended up proving that he will have a massive role to play. He would end up proving his importance with the cameo in Thor: Ragnarok where we would see him making a rather big move. This would actually end up being the reason that we got to see the Hulk land at the Sanctum Sanctorum when Thanos had attacked Thor and the others in the opening sequence from Avengers: Infinity War. Strange would have a massive role to play during the end of the Infinity Saga appearing next to Iron Man and the other Avengers.

Strange was the one who brought the other characters during the final battle in Avengers: Endgame along with Wong. If it wasn’t for Strange then Iron Man won’t have made his sacrifice as he would have been unsure about what he ended up doing. This clearly proves his importance amongst the other Avengers and how important his role was in the franchise. We all assumed that the character was now a member of the Avengers as over the past few years a lot of new names had made it into the group of heroes. But it seems that one of the most important people behind the character feels otherwise.

Avengers 4 Fan Theory

Benedict Cumberbatch feels that his MCU character is not an Avenger. While promoting his other project The Power of the Dog in a talk with KCRW, the actor spoke about this and gave a reason for this. He stated:

People say that you were in the Avengers, but you’re not an Avenger, right? No, I’m not. I’m not at Stark Tower with Nick Fury. No, he’s sort of outside of that realm, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a character trait. I think that is just a job title. He’s there to protect the reality of the Avengers in a different way to what they have been fighting up until the point that everything collides in the last two Avengers movies, so he holds his position as an adult on the periphery of that, but I think only for so long. There’s always a moment where he has to work with people and team up. And you know, we might see that in the next film; you have to wait and see.

Why Doctor Strange is not an Avenger

In a way, this actually makes sense considering the position as the Master of the Mystic Arts, the character has a lot on his plate. Adding anything else to that would only make it a lot more complex and prove to be too much for the character. We will get to witness how massive his role is in the world of Mystic Arts with the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But at the same time, this makes us wonder whether other characters who appeared during the end of the Infinity Saga are members of the Avengers. They all have had essential roles of their own to play before they worked in on the franchise.

But the post-credits scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings contradicts his explanation. If he is not an Avenger, how does Wong manage to contact Bruce Banner and Captain Marvel to make Shang-Chi and Katie members of the Avengers? It would surely require some sort of position in the group of heroes to be able to be part of such a decision and also summon the characters for a meeting. Based on his present involvement in the franchise, we can be sure that he will end up taking a major role in the existing version of the Avengers.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in theaters worldwide on May 6.
