5 Superhero Movie Sequels That Improved Upon Their Originals

The concept of sequels and expanding on the narrative has been something that has existed for quite a long time now. We got to see some of the greatest narratives being explored over the years with the sequels giving us a lot more than we expected. These sequels often end up working out some of the issues that the original films might have had. This is necessary because the first films actually don’t end up being a very successful entry. But this can be dealt with with a sequel that might expand on the issues and actually make something good out of the issues. Let’s take a look at some superhero movie sequels that actually ended up improving on the original movies.

The Dark Knight

Most of the time, superhero movies have elements that the fans of such projects might end up enjoying a lot more. But this isn’t the case with some of the other projects as they might end up being a lot more than just a superhero movie. This is the case with The Dark Knight. Batman Begins might have managed to give us something to see in terms of a Batman origin story but things were taken to a whole new level with the sequel. The movie managed to give us a project that ran with so many narratives at the same time by not only focusing on the character of Batman the entire time.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Considered amongst the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Winter Soldier clearly took the narrative to a whole new level. Captain America: The First Avenger didn’t fair well with the fans and this actually led to it being associated amongst the lesser of the MCU films. But the sequel actually transformed how we saw Captain America’s solo ventures. The movie had elements of various spy thrillers we have gotten to see and this allowed for a lot more grounded narrative from the franchise. Plus the movie actually made the character of Bucky Barnes a lot more important than we could have imagined.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Superhero Movie Sequels

Guillermo Del Toro is known for his iconic work that has a certain beauty attached to it. This was seen in the case of his first Hellboy movie where he used the concept in bits. But the director actually brought his entire element with the second entry to the Hellboy movies, with characters that actually looked hellish while giving us a brilliant narrative. There was a lot to explore in the movie along with the beautiful visuals that he managed to provide us. The sequel is surely a masterpiece when it comes to superhero movies.

X2: X-Men United

The X-Men movies were the very first of the Marvel projects that introduced a whole new set of interesting characters. But the very first film tried to focus a lot more on the superpowers and the special effects surrounding the characters. The plot was too thin and it didn’t have a larger impact on the audience. But this would change entirely with the sequel. X2 ended up giving us an exciting plot that fans couldn’t even have expected to get from the movies while at the same time giving each mutant an interesting narrative. The movie will forever remain an important entry to the Marvel superhero movies.

Superman II (The Richard Donner Cut)

Superhero Movie Sequels

Superman was definitely the movie that paved the way for an interesting tone when it comes to superhero movies. It had everything that convinced people to actually go and see the movie and believe that the man could fly. But other than there is hardly much that might be considered a memorable part of the movie. It might be a strong foundation because the sequel to the movie actually had a lot more to say than we might have expected. Richard Donner’s cut for Superman II is actually something that makes us wonder about how memorable the character could be. It is probably one of the finest entries into the live-action interpretations of Superman.
