The comic book movie genre has grown incredibly over the last decade and a half. Much of it is due to the incredible effort by Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. They have brought the genre back from obscurity and into the limelight. We live in a time when geeks are celebrated and the MCU is a big reason for it. Here is a list of all Superhero Movies of 2021 ranked from worst to best. Take a look and let us know if you agree with it in the comments down below.
8. Thunder Force
Netflix’s Thunder Force was advertised as a superhero comedy. However, after watching the movie it has become crystal clear that the movie is hardly funny, if ever. The talented cast cannot redeem a boring script. Even more so when the user has the option to fast forward through the boring parts, which is just about all of the movie. Thunder Force builds up to something that it never quite delivers on and for this reason, it finds itself on the bottom of our list.
7. Black Widow
Black Widow was a long-awaited release by Marvel. Ever since the first Avengers movie came out fans had been vying for a solo Black Widow venture. We finally got the movie this year and Scarlet Johanson doesn’t disappoint with her lethal style. The origin story of Black Widow was much needed, especially after Natasha’s death in Endgame. Yelena also made for a wonderful addition to the MCU. Despite our prediction about Taskmaster’s identity being right, this film wasted the character and didn’t really give us the closure we needed for Natasha after Endgame. It’s sort of a wasted opportunity overall, which is why we’ve ranked it so low.
6. Venom: Let There Be Carnage
The much-awaited sequel to Venom in the SPUMC came out this year. After teasing Woody Harrelson as Carnage in the after-credits scene of the first movie fans expected that the sequel would feature some hardcore symbiote and symbiote action. However, what we got from the movie was a bland mash-up of basic comic book movie tropes. The genre was changed from an Anti-hero saga to an obligatory adventure. It was funny but its rewatchability is almost nil since it was a pretty short movie. The most exciting bit about it was the post-credits scene, but we have to judge a movie, not just one scene. So all in all, the result was rather disappointing. The film made a big mistake by not spending proper time and reasoning on Carnage’s origins.
5. The Suicide Squad
James Gunn makes a splash in the 2021 lineup with The Suicide Squad. The director showed off his signature style with this soft reboot of the team in the DCEU. It was especially funny how the director fooled everyone through the marketing of the movie and did a complete U-turn in the first 10 minutes. The death of The Suicide Squad A-team was as much as a surprise to the casual moviegoer as to the fanatic. However, the movie came up short in the story department. It was only a visual treat.
Eternals makes an entry on our list in 5th place. You know Marvel is doing something extraordinary when their fourth-best movie of the year casts Salma Hayek and is directed by one of the most prominent directors out there. Chloe Zhao Shows off her storytelling skills in this origin story of the cosmically powered superheroes of Marvel. We finally get a look at the celestials and the power cosmic in the MCU.
3. Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Justice League has been through a strange journey. The movie was first supposed to be directed by Zack Snyder but after his daughter’s death, the man had to excuse himself from the job. Then Wheadon came in and finished the movie but the theatrical cut was laughable, at best. Finally, the Snyder Cut came out this year on the OTT services and we have to say it is some of Snyder’s best work. Although, due to the OTT release the movie is a bit longer than normal but it is an exceptional adventure in character development.
2. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Now we get to the movies with which marvel it out of the park this year. Shang Chi & The Ten Rings is an origin story, plain and simple. Marvel has gotten so good at these that they can do it with their eyes closed at this point. This movie also resolves some loose ends back from Iron Man and Iron Man 3, so it gets some brownie points for continuity. Marvel has made an excellent film and it would have been their best this year if not for our next entry.
1. Spider-Man: No Way Home
No Way Home has to be one of the most hyped movies out there. It got so much marketing focused on it that we almost expected the movie to disappoint. But the great thing about this film is that it goes above and beyond what was expected of it. This movie was a masterclass in movie making as during the 2hr 28-minute runtime not a single frame is wasted. We like to say that the MCU has the habit of peaking every now and then. The last time we were so impressed by Marvel, we were watching Infinity War.
