Here’s All the Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

James Gunn’s new The Suicide Squad is about to arrive in the cinemas. This reboot-sequel of the first David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016) comes with a new directorship and a revised cast consisting of many new characters like David Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher among others. James Gunn was asked to direct the movie after the first film received negative reviews like having a muddled plot and thinly written characters.

The infamous director of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn revealed the cast line-up earlier in 2019 and it was a great surprise for many people. The new cast members included JohnCena and Idris Elba among others. Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, and the beloved Harley Quinn, portrayed by Margot Robbie join the cast as well. Anyway, 5 characters are still missing from the older roster. Here are all the characters that aren’t being brought back in The Suicide Squad:

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

Joker

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

After reprising the short-lived role of Joker in the Snyder’s Cut, Jared Leto won’t be returning in the new movie. He was introduced in the first Suicide Squad but receiving public criticism, he wasn’t included in the Birds of Prey as well. He played the role of Joker to disrupt Waller’s plan and for the origin of Harley Quinn, therefore we can not say if he will be missed in the new movie.

James Gunn has commented that Joker just doesn’t fit the plot of the movie. The movie is filled with violent and villainous characters. But they all share a feeling of doing something good. Joker just lacks this thought and enjoys chaos among his friends and foes. It’s also hard to say that he will appear in the upcoming movies after the Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix reprised this role in 2019’s Joker. Needless to say, people will miss the chaos.

Enchantress/ June Moone

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

After the events of the first film, people never expected, Cara Delevingne’s Dr. June Moone to make an appearance. Even though her boyfriend Rick Flag is in the cast, June Moone will not be seen as the Enchantress again. She played a huge role as a villain in the 2016 Suicide Squad and in the end, lifted the curse upon herself. It was she who should’ve received credit for the formation of the first Suicide Squad. After the sacrifice by El Diablo, Incubus died and Enchantress dies a little later. So we don’t see any way why June Moone will be back.

Deadshot

The movie’s producer informed that bad timing is the only reason for the absence of Will Smith in the new movie. Although being the first person to be cast in the first movie, it’s a little heartbreaking to not see Smith as Deadshot. People even say that the whole point of casting Idris Elba was to fill the void that Smith left. It was so that when people were guessing the role given to Elba, some said that he will come as Deadshot. But later it was confirmed that a well-known character of Bloodsport is being introduced through Elba. Bloodsport is a no-nonsense mercenary just like Deadshot.

Killer Croc

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc was one of the first to inform that they won’t be returning for The Suicide Squad in 2021. After getting his team an Academy Award for the Best Makeup ad Hairstyling, this Game of Thrones actor confirmed that the monster in the new movie won’t be played by him. He was replaced by King Shark after this information.

Few know that that King Shark was thought to be the original monster in the first film too but the CGI requirements were quite high and the budget was limited. After the first film’s success James Gunn thought it wise to go with the original plan.

Katana

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

The only volunteer member of Task Force X, Katana wields a soul-trapping sword and knows martial arts. In the first film, she was introduced to the team to save Rick Flag from being killed. She was even about to kill the Enchantress but was luckily stopped by Rick Flag. Overall, she proved to be a worthy member of the team. But an important scene in her role was cut due to duration issues. In the scene, she turned on her team due to the mind-controlling abilities of the Enchantress. We might see this in the possible Ayer’s Cut which is under consideration after Snyder’s Cut.

Slipknot

The brief role of Adam Beach’s Slipknot was the first to be confirmed t be absent in the sequel. His character was used as a demonstration to the other members of the Task Force as to what would happen if they fall out of line. The members were gossiping that Waller was lying about the neck-bombs but after Slipknot’s unfortunate death, they knew better. While some people thought that they would make his character reincarnate for the new movie, but James Gunn declined those rumors.

El Diablo

Characters Not Returning in The Suicide Squad

During the climax, El Diablo proved to be the strongest member of Task Force X. He single-handedly defeated the Incubus while the Enchantress was busy completing her ritual. . Although, he openly supported the release of the Ayer’s Cut, he didn’t comment on his return in the new movie. With him being dead and not in the upcoming movie, Jay Fernandez’s El Diablo’s return seems unlikely in the possible future.

So these are the members that we know are not going to be in the new installment. However, it may be nice to see a fresh cast with their storylines and character arcs. The James Gunn direction and the trailers have shown the movie to be hilarious, action, tragic, and interesting. All the reviews so far have been positive while we wait for it to be released worldwide.
