10 Upcoming Movie Reboots That Might Turn Out To Be Successful

Movie franchises are something that nowadays works in Hollywood. The best of the best classics are being remade or are now getting rebooted. Now there are many reasons because of which a movie might get a reboot. Sometimes a movie cannot fulfill the expectations of the audience. In that situation, the best thing to do is to go back and start from the beginning. The reboot gives a better chance to correct the mistakes done in the original work. Even though the pandemic will take some time to end, Hollywood production studios have planned a few reboots that are on the way in the next few years. Now, let’s look at the upcoming movie reboots that could be successful.

Upcoming Movie Reboots

1. Dungeons & Dragons

The Dungeons & Dragons film franchise was based on the role-playing game of the same name.  Now the franchise is getting a reboot. The reboot is scheduled to release on March 3, 2023, and is being directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez would play the main roles. Details related to the plot have not been revealed yet but hopefully, it will be out by 2022. After the failure of the first films, several attempts were made to revive the franchise until it was finally decided to reboot the franchise. One reason why it could be successful is because there will be a completely new take on the characters with a new script. So it is possible that the film might be well received by the critics and audiences.

2. Blade

Marvel’s Blade franchise that started in 1998 was able to impress the audience. The first film was released in 1998, followed by the second in 2004 and the third one in 2007. Now after being in a decade of development hell, the Blade franchise is finally getting a reboot. Mahershala Ali has been cast as the Daywalker. Details of the plot have been revealed but the film is this time getting a rating of PG-13 instead of R. Now this is somewhere bad for the future of the character in the MCU. But the film could work because of the rating. PG-13 rating means that even the family audience could go and watch the film.

3. Spawn

1997’s Spawn was panned by critics and audiences. Now after being in development hell, Spawn is being rebooted. Numerous attempts were made in the last few years to reboot the film but every attempt failed. Blumhouse Productions confirmed the reboot in 2017. A few reports say that the budget of the project might be around $10 to $12 million. This means that the reboot will be a grittier and a more down and dirty take on the character. A recent update says that Todd McFarlane is going to write and produce the film. The lead role will be played by Jamie Foxx and another member confirmed is Jeremy Renner. Superhero movies are working a lot nowadays. Now a completely new superhuman character can easily pull the audience to the theaters.

4. Superman

DCEU was expected to bring some success to the Superman franchise. But that did not happen since Batman V Superman and Justice League did not work well at the box office. Now after the Black Superman appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Warner Bros. is planning a reboot with the Black Superman. It is not confirmed if Henry Cavill will reprise his role or not. Cavill’s future in DCEU is uncertain but the reboot can work if Cavill appears again as Superman on the big screen. Even if someone else is casted in the lead role, the film will work since the character has now become a fan favorite. The plot and release date of the film is yet to be revealed.

5. Highlander

Upcoming Movie Reboots

The Highlander movie franchise was created by Gregory Widen. It received a mixed reception from critics. In the last 15 years, several attempts have been done to revive the series but all of them have been unsuccessful. Various directors were also attached to make the reboot. Now the latest report says that Chad Stahelski is currently attached to direct. But the film is still in the early stages of development. There has been no further information on the plot and cast of the film. So for now, we cannot predict a release date for the reboot of the Highlander franchise. The film might work this time since there could be changes in the script and more focus on character development.

6. The Toxic Avenger

The 1984 superhero black comedy splatter film The Toxic Avenger is popular for its campy concepts and gruesome violence. It was announced in 2019 that Legendary Entertainment was developing a reboot of the film. The original creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment were also hired as producers along with Macon Blair as writer and director. A few other reports also say that Peter Dinklage will be seen in the lead along with Kevin Bacon as the villain. Now the release date and plot of the film are yet to be revealed. It is not known if it will be a completely new story or will continue directly from the first franchise. Superhero movies have been doing good business since the introduction of MCU and DCEU. Now the cinematic debut of a superhero outside these two franchises can still prove to be profitable.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a fictional comic book team created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Five films have been made till now based on the characters. Now the franchise is getting another reboot. This time, Seth Rogen is the co-producer and the film will be directed by The Mitchells vs. the Machines co-director Jeff Rowe. The script is being written by Brendan O’Brien. The cast and plot details of the film has not been revealed yet. But the film is confirmed to arrive in theaters on August 11, 2023. There is a chance that the reboot could get a better response than the previous films. The film could remain faithful to the source material and this can help the movie to become a box office success.

8. Hellraiser

Upcoming Movie Reboots

The 1987 supernatural horror film Hellraiser is still known as one of the best horror films ever made. Hellraiser was followed by nine sequels and Doug Bradley reprised his role as Pinhead in all the nine movies. A big-budget reboot was confirmed in 2019 with David S. Goyer as the producer. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski were brought to write the script and David Bruckner was chosen as the director. Reports say that Odessa A’Zion has been cast in the lead role and the film is aiming for a release in Hulu instead of a theatrical release. Horror movie reboots have always received a decent response. Now since Hellraiser is considered a cult classic, the film can pull audience to the theaters. But this is entirely dependent on how the film is made. Sometimes changes in the script can make a movie unsuccessful so the makers have to be careful with that if they plan to make any changes.

9. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City

The Resident Evil film series is not loved much by the critics. The last film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was released in 2016. The title indicated that the franchise has finally come to an end. But that is not the truth. Even though fans have not yet demanded anything, the franchise is getting a reboot. The film has been titled Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City. The film is set to release on November 24 this year. It is directed by Johannes Roberts and features Kaya Scodelario, Robbie Amell, Hannah John-Kamen, Avan Jogia and others in the lead roles. Apart from the zombies and gore, the film could focus more on the character development and eventually make it popular among the critics as well as audiences.

10. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Military science fiction action film series, G.I. Joe is based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe toy, comic, and media franchises.  Now after eight years, the third film is finally arriving at the theaters. The film has been titled Snake Eyes and is directed by Robert Schwentke. The film is scheduled to release on July 23, 2021. It is a reboot and also an origin story of the title character Snake Eyes. The film features Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, Haruka Abe and others in the lead roles. The character Snake Eyes was introduced in the first G.I. Joe. It was a mysterious character and audiences were curious to know more about him. Now the reboot will focus only on Snake Eyes and this is the reason why audiences will go to the theaters and watch this film.
