Marvel has always launched one new franchise every year. In the same way, the Eternals are also going to make its debut this year. Marvel has not yet started promotions for Eternals. They are doing this to avoid any loss in case the release gets disrupted because of the ongoing pandemic. But recently, an MCU sizzle reel promoting Eternals was released along with the rest of 2021’s MCU content. The focus of the sizzle reel is to sell viewers the experience of watching films on the big screen. The clips of the Eternals have been carefully selected to stress the importance of human connection. This makes sense. But it also means that some of the expected grandeur is not there yet on the show. Now let’s analyze what Marvel has revealed.
Eternals Reassemble
There is a shot where we get to see the Eternals back together in the modern-day. Towards the left side, we can see a robust piece of camera equipment. It is unknown if it was an intentional inclusion or some error on Disney’s part. The threat of the Deviants might be a good reason to bring back the Eternals together. There is also another theory related to this shot. All the members are not seen in this shot. So it is possible that the group might be greeted by one of their own.
The City of the Space Gods
The Eternals can be seen in some ancient ruins. A city that is connected to Marvel Comics is the City of the Space Gods. It is a network of Incan temples located in the Andes. MCU may have shifted the same location to ancient Mesopotamia or present-day Iraq so that it can fit with the history-bending narrative that the characters center around. This place also has the Resurrection Crypt. Tragedy will strike the group in the film. So there is a chance that they might go to these ruins to reverse their demises.
Ajak’s healing horses?
Salma Hayek’s Ajax is a character we have seen in the trailer. She is wearing a cowboy hat and is striding up on her horse in a wide-open plain. It might be a display of the practical locations that Eternals will show off. The character’s ability to heal and communicate with other beings might extend to animals. Her powers might let her heal and talk to horses. The shot hints that Ajax may have become some type of stable hand and uses it as a harmless façade to aid humanity’s development. Because Ajax is seen on a horse, it is clear that the Eternals are giving their best to blend into human society.
Kingo Arrives
You can see Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo in one of the footage. He is seen in a desert area along with an odd fellow carrying a camcorder and a large bag. The other character might be recording with his small camera and documenting Kingo’s celebrity lifestyle. It is possible that he might be chronicling the lives of the Eternals and following them on their adventures. This particular footage has raised a lot of questions about where this film will actually lead us. Well, we will get our answer after the release of the film.
Thena fights Gilgamesh
One of the footage shows Angelina Jolie’s Thena with a glowing blade and fighting an oncoming foe. Now normally speaking, it might be a Deviant but the foe is looking like a human. The figure actually resembles Gilgamesh. Thena then brings her blade in for a close-up and shows up the intricate and delicate details of the shining saber. According to the comics, Thena’s weapon can slice and dice through anything, retroactive immortality, and energy absorption. The footage might point to Thena fighting Dane Whitman’s Black Knight.
A reunion or a farewell?
A shot shows two Eternals moving to touch hands. They belong to Lia McHugh’s Sprite and Gemma Chan’s Sersi. The shot might be hinting towards the starting of the group’s tenure on Earth. Many objects can be seen in the background. Sprite is the youngest in this group and the last to join it. The team might be uniting to welcome her arrival on Earth. This can also be a moment where the team splits to assimilate among the ranks of humanity. They would say goodbye before they reunite after 7000 years.
Gemma Chan’s Sersi
Gemma Chan is being touted as the lead of the Eternals. So, she would get her own spotlight in the short bits of footage. This can also be aimed towards the Eternals themselves. They might be a part of an impassioned speech for motivation against the upcoming threat. If the group can change everything, they will definitely overcome the mounting evil that opposes them. It might be supported by Sersi’s character description. It says that she is helping Ikaris to recruit the Eternals for one last mission. The line might be a part of a bigger monologue to get the other Eternals on board.
Eternals is the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Chloé Zhao. Eternals features an ensemble cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, and Barry Keoghan. It is scheduled to release on November 5, 2021.
