Drax The Destroyer is a very popular character in the Marvel universe and his cinematic portrayal by Dave Bautista was also very well received. Although the MCU version and the comic book version are very different from each other, they both are equally loved by the fans.

#1: Creation and Debut

Drax The Destroyer was created by Jim Starlin in February 1973. He debuted in the popular comic book, ‘The Invincible Iron Man #55’. Jim Starlin wanted to create a different type of character which was not at all generic. Drax and Thanos made their debut from the same comic book, as Drax was created as a weapon against Thanos.

#2: Origin and Purpose

Drax the Destroyer was a human being at first named Arthur Douglas, whose family was attacked and killed by the supervillain Thanos. In order to stop the terror inflicted by Thanos, Kronos took Arthur’s spirit and placed it in a powerful new body in the last effort to create a champion to combat Thanos, and then Drax the Destroyer was born.

He could travel at high speeds in outer space and hyperspace without air, food or water. He also had the ability to telepath at one point.

Jim Starlin resurrected Drax in Silver Surfer vol 3 #35 (1990), and after that, he had a recurring role in the comic books. After his resurrection, his physical capabilities were greatly enhanced beyond their original levels but he suffered severe mental disability in his new incarnation, which is closer to the character’s depiction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Drax’s daughter, Heather Douglas or more popularly known as Moondragon was still alive after Thanos’ attack. She was found by Mentor (Thanos’s father). The special thing about Moondragon is that she gained all her powers through sheer hard work, unlike the majority of superheroes who got their powers through some experiment or chance. Moondragon also became an unofficial member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Drax was also a part of this group and he was given the Power Stone to protect. Drax was able to tap into the stone’s power naturally. At one-point, Drax mistook the power stone for a jelly bean and swallowed it. Clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed.

In the Comic Book series, Cancerverse, Drax and his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy battled the evil version of the Avengers. Drax and his team finally defeated the Avengers, but not completely. In the Cancerverse, the concept of permanent death was not present so it was impossible to kill anyone. Only Thanos was able to completely destroy the characters in that reality.

As we all know, Drax was created by a powerful entity named Kronos, he had a lot of special properties. His Blood had a component that acted as a powerful hallucinatory stimulant when ingested by some species. So Drax used to sell his blood as a drug to other species. He was basically a dealer at this point.

To lure out Drax, Thanos once kidnapped his daughter Moondragon to use her as bait. This was a very big mistake on Thanos’ part as this move completely backfired. Drax completely lost his cool and went after Thanos. He fought Thanos and ultimately murdered him by literally ripping his heart out of his body, and saved his daughter.
