With the advent of Avengers: Infinity War on April 27th, 2018 the entire landscape of the Marvel Cinematic Universe underwent a radical paradigm shift. We saw Thanos enter the fray of the current reality and disseminate the entirety of our ‘hero’ roster as if they were made of paper. The might and the strength of the Titan were greatly underestimated by the earth’s mightiest heroes and Guardians of the Galaxy and our heroes paid dearly for this misstep.
Not only did we lose a large chunk of our heroes but we also lost all the infinity stones to the Mad Titan. Not only are the heroes defeated but they are also devoid of the only power that can ever be used to undo the deeds of Thanos and his minions. At the end of Infinity War, all of the Marvel fandoms witnessed as the Mad Titan snapped the infinity gauntlet and committed the greatest atrocity to ever occur in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We saw Captain America crumble with defeat as he witnessed Bucky Barnes dissipate in front of his own eyes. It is largely expected that Avengers: Endgame will follow a plot line that will aim to reverse the snap from Infinity War. The fandom, the writers, and even the general populace not associated with the Marvel franchise know that the deaths of Infinity War are not permanent.
In fact, it is highly probable that the deaths of Infinity War are just a way by which Marvel will introduce the tropes of killing off main characters in a bout to increase sales and subsequently bring them back in future installments. Be that as it may, the big question is not if the Marvel characters will be resurrected but HOW? Well, a recent theory on reddit forum r/fantheories may possess the answer.
The user u/Scissor-Lift starts off by referencing another theory that has been making rounds online regarding Avengers: Endgame. The theory so referenced talks about how the Avengers will solve the problem of a huge power gap between them and the infinity gauntlet powered (albeit injured) Mad Titan Thanos.
The theory expands on the current idea of Time Travel (the theory whereby the Avengers will harness the power of either the time stone or the quantum realm to travel through time and collect all of the infinity stones to challenge Thanos to a “universe hangs in the balance” duel) theory and builds upon it by suggesting that the time travel will be undertaken not to collect the infinity stones but to collect their energy signatures. The suggestion is that the Avengers will find a way to harness the power of the stones without actually possessing them.
It seems that some super science is involved here whereby Tony Stark will make a point to build a device (a new Iron Man suit no doubt ) that will be capable of harnessing and storing the energy of the stones giving the Avengers the perfect way to fight off Thanos with enough skin in the game.
It is also entirely possible that the energy so harnessed by the Avengers is limited and Iron Man only has one chance to put Thanos down for good. This idea will immensely raise the stakes of a confrontation between Iron Man and the Mad Titan and also goes a long way to reflect the humanity of Stark.
It is also a possibility that one Avenger is chosen to bear the energy of one stone. For example, as u/Scissor-Lift points out in his theory Captain Marvel seems to be synonymous with the space stone and similarly, Rocket seems to be the only viable choice for the power stone, Thor may choose to embody the power of the dark elves with the reality stone and so on. It is a far-fetched theory but it also makes an incredible amount of sense.
The intentions of Avengers will remain a mystery until Endgame finally rolls out in theatres but it seems highly likely that Tony will come up with something similar if not more incredulous in his own ingenuity. Let’s hope that Endgame is everything we hoped it would be. Endgame comes out in theatres on April 26, 2019; up until then, keep watching this space for everything Marvel.
