While everyone’s focused upon the upcoming month of 2019, as soon as we are done with Avengers: Endgame, and probably even Spider-Man, people will start talking about what’s next. While it is not crystal clear as to what Marvel is planning for the future of the MCU, we still do have a good idea for what’s going to happen in the majority of the next 2 years. As far as 2020 is concerned, it will most likely begin with Black Widow and end with The Eternals. We don’t have an idea as to whether Marvel will add another project in between.
Talking about the Eternals, the movie is actually going under the casting process and it was revealed a while ago that Marvel will be looking to cast their first over openly Gay actor in the lead. But so far no actor had been attached to a role in the film, until now! According to a new report coming from The Hollywood Reporter, Angelina Jolie is in talks to play a role in the upcoming MCU prequel, The Eternals.
For those of you who don’t know, being in talks is totally different from being eyed for a particular role. In Talks obviously means that Marvel and a particular actor have met and only the final contract signing is pending. So, as soon as it becomes official, Angelina Jolie will become the first actor to have joined the potentially huge cast of this movie. There are obviously a lot of actors that are going to be involved with this film as it is a movie similar to Guardians of the Galaxy based upon a group of characters expanding the cosmic side of the MCU, but only a millennia ago in the past.
Given Angelina Jolie’s star stature, she could actually be playing the lead in the film. But it is also entirely possible for her to be attached in order to play a significant supporting role. She has been the lead in many action movies in the past, including Salt, Wanted, Lara Croft, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and many more. Along with that, she has done a variety of roles that have always proved her versatility.
But this would be her first comic book movie role, even though it might not be the first time she has been associated with Marvel. Back in 2015, there were rumors suggesting the fact that Marvel was looking for Angelina Jolie to direct Captain Marvel.
The Eternals are going to start yet another potential trilogy that Marvel is going to run in the future of the MCU. It is entirely plausible that we will see some characters from the franchise appear in present movies as well. Here’s what Kevin Feige said of the Eternals in an interview last year:
“You’re reaction about not being familiar with the Eternals is perfect, because most people weren’t familiar with Guardians [of the Galaxy] and believe it or not there were people that were not familiar with Avengers or with Iron Man. So for us, its finding great stories whether people have heard of them or not and bring them to the big screen in as amazing a way as we can.”
Directed by Chloe Zhao, and from a script written by brothers Matthew and Ryan Firpo, The Eternals will supposedly come out on November 6, 2020. Here’s the synopsis running around the internet:
“The story of ‘THE ETERNALS’ is set millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered individuals as well as more villainous off-shoots known as Deviants. The two groups went on to battle each other throughout history to see which would eventually become the ultimate race. The story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.”
It is entirely possible that Angelina Jolie will star as Sersi in the movie.
