The Hollywood moviemaking machine has been on overdrive lately. It has been churning one incredible blockbuster after another. This year has been witness to a lot of awesome science-fiction movies that have become a household phenomenon. One has even managed to win an Oscar while others like Avengers: Infinity War, Venom and Aquaman will forever be remembered as cinematic masterpieces. As far as science fiction movies are considered, 2018 has delivered splendidly. But can 2019 continue the trend? Presenting – 20 Sci-Fi Movies that are coming to rock your world in 2019!!
1. Godzilla: King of Monsters
The King of the Kaiju World returns next year to amaze us yet again. After the original movie managed to reinvigorate our love for big-ass monsters from Japanese folklore Godzilla is coming back in a sequel to the movie and this time, the monsters will be bigger, bolder and better. And did we mention that there will be Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah in this one?
2. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
The X-Men franchise is breathing its final breaths. The New Mutants and the untitled Multiple Man movie will probably be its final ventures. But for now, let us enjoy the extravaganza that will be X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The comic saga of the evil psychic entity continues as the X-Men prepare for the onslaught of a rogue Jean Grey.
3. Captive State
What would you do when you realize that the world you live in has experienced a mother lode of a power struggle? What would you do when you realize that you no longer live in a democracy or even under human leadership for that matter? Captive State explores the livelihood of people who are currently living under a seemingly benevolent alien regime.
4. Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is the strongest Avenger ever. After the world realizes that Thanos has actually managed to do the unthinkable, wiping out half of all life in the universe, it is only Captain Marvel that currently has the power to defeat the Mad Titan who holds the Infinity Stones in his hands. But first, we need to realize her origin story.
5. Alita: Battle Angel
Although managing to garner quite a bit of controversy, Alita Battle Angel is a cult classic manga and anime series and anime fans all over the world will flock to the theatres to watch it undoubtedly. Alita is a defunct cyborg that is given a new leash at life after a scientist discovers her dead body in the ruins. Alita is a unique cyborg with a unique talent to use a specific form of martial arts that can neutralize other cyborgs, making her a threat to a world that is now ruled by machines.
6. Replicas
Keanu Reeve stars in the sci-fi thriller movie where he stars as a prominent neuroscientist working to unlock the secrets of the human brain. The mind is a wondrous thing but it is so damn complicated that it is almost impossible to replicate. Keanu’s character does the exact same thing when he replicates the human mind of his entire family after they meet with a fatal accident.
7. Ad Astra
The movie features Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones. The story involves a son (Brad Pitt) traversing the depths of a lawless solar system to find his missing father (Tommy Lee Jones), a scientist whose research posits a threat to the very existence of the human race.
8. Avengers: Endgame
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will be throwing another bone at us in the form of Avengers: Endgame, the continuation of the Infinity War storyline, which is supposed to be a two part story arc. Endgame will feature the surviving Avengers desperately looking for a way to undo the actions of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
9. Spider-Man: Far From Home
Spider-Man: Homecoming was a blast. Tom Holland was born to play the role of Peter Parker. He will be reprising that role again in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to Homecoming. The movie will feature Nick Fury and Maria Hill as well and will star Jake Gyllenhaal as the antagonist Mysterio.
10. Men In Black International
The Thor: Ragnarok movie gave us many things, but its greatest gift to us was the incredible chemistry between Thor and Valkyrie. The actors are coming back to the Big Screens in another movie yet again but this time, they are not superheroes. They are secret agents trying to stop the world from an alien invasion/conspiracy.
11. Shazam!
Captain Marvel is not a name exclusive to Marvel Comics. Many do not know but the original superhero who first wielded the name was from DC Comics. Shazam is not actually Billy Batson’s superhero alter ego’s actual name in the comics. It is Captain Marvel, the magically powered mightiest mortal that has the power of six different Gods.
12. Masters of the Universe
By the power of Grayskull, He-Man returns to the Big Screens next year. The masters of the Universe will feature a non-conventional storyline, according to the rumours. It will feature major actors and an ensemble cast. Masters of the Universe will also pit Skeletor and He-Man as brothers that grow to be rivals! Like we said, unconventional it will be.
13. Terminator 6
The Machines are rising once again. And only Sarah Connor and co has the knowledge and the foresight to stop this thing by nipping it in the bud. Terminator 6 will feature the return of James Cameron as the director and will be a total reboot of the franchise. It will still feature Arnold as the eponymous Terminator though.
14. Detective Pikachu
Ryan Reynolds is currently on cloud nine with back to back hit movies. The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Deadpool as well as Deadpool 2 have all been amazing action blockbusters. He returns yet again with Detective Pikachu. He will be lending his voice to the titular character that lives in a world where Pokemon are very much real and something fishy is going on behind the scenes that Pikachu will investigate along with his human companion.
15. New Mutants
We would have never thought that Superheroes and the horror genre could mix so well. But Fox is known to wow us with such amazing concepts. The New Mutants movie will be an intense psychological thriller and will feature many well-known actors in the lead role. Oh and did we mention that it also has Maisie Williams aka Arya Stark of Got fame in it!!
16. Glass
Night Shyamalan is the God of twists and turns. He gave us the Sixth Sense, the first horror movie to ever be nominated for an Oscar. His intensely realistic movies make the audience think that almost anything is possible in the real world.
After Unbreakable and Split, the next movie in line in that weirdly intense franchise is Glass! What more does Shyamalan have in store for us? Apart from the fact that the movie will finally unite the three ‘super humans’, it will also be the final end to an extremely popular, cult classic trilogy. We just hope the movie does not let us down.
17. Chaos Walking
The movie is based on a book of the same name. Its premise is a dystopian future where Humanity is almost on the verge of extinction and the remaining mankind is somehow telepathically connected and can hear each other’s thoughts. It features Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland in lead roles and has Doug Liman of Edge of Tomorrow fame as its director.
18. Warriors of Future
The story of this sci-fi horror thriller goes something like this – the planet is dying and to heal it, the universe sends an asteroid that crashes onto Earth and stops global warming. The only side effect is that the meteorite also considers humanity as a disease and it is planning to wipe it out of the face of the Earth as well.
19. Iron Sky: The Coming Race
After featuring the bizarre conspiracy theory of Nazis on Moon as an actual storyline, the next conspiracy that this science fiction comedy movie is using is the Hollow-Earth theory. The Nazis, led by Hitler, have managed to evade the Allies by digging a hole to the centre of the Earth and coming back to the Earth’s surface for a global invasion after preparing for one since fifty years which is when the movie takes place. What is next? The Flat Earth theory!!!
20. The Last Boy
The movie has a rookie yet highly talented Director by the name of Perry Bhandal. It will actors like Luke Gross, Anna Wilson-Jones and Peter Guiness. The movie will be an intense sci-fi drama in a post-apocalyptic future where Humanity is dying along with the planet. A lone boy decides to travel to a fabled place that can grant any wish a man desires. The boy’s intention is to have the last wish of his dying mother fulfilled.
