18 Stunning Concept Arts of Every Major Marvel Superhero That Almost Made it to The Theatres

Marvel experiments a lot. In the comic books and in the movies, Marvel is a master at radicalizing many comic book idols and completely changed what and how they look like. Thanks to Entertainment Magazine, we now have some official images of concept arts of your favourite superheroes that almost happened but were changed at the last minute for something else. Had Marvel stepped into the other direction then things could have been way different. Presenting – 18 Stunning concept arts of Every Major Marvel Superhero that almost made it to theatres!!

 1. Captain America

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Captain America: The First Avenger showed Steve Rogers in the classic Leather jacket and a triangular shield. Wearing a pilot cap and thick goggles, Cap looked just like the Super Soldier when he made his first official debut for Marvel Comics. In the concept art that almost happened, Captain America has a different outfit that is way more rugged and retrograde in appearance. There is a lot more red, blue and white stripes on his outfit as well.

 2. Vision

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

The android Avenger first came into the picture in Avengers: Age of Ultron of 2015. Ever since his debut, the Vision has been an integral part of the Avengers. During the events of Civil War and Infinity War in the MCU, Vision played pivotal roles. Vision’s classic red and green appearance was to be replaced by a rather bold black gold and red appearance.

 3. Black Widow

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

The extremely over-sexualized Black Widow character played by Scarlet Johansson has been a flagship character of the MCU ever since her debut in Iron Man 2. In this concept art, we come to realize that the costume, which was termed to be too revealing for anyone liking, could have been replaced by a rather sleek and more tactical looking Shield suit. Too bad it did not happen.

 4. Iron Man

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Had there been no Iron Man, there would probably have been no MCU. It was this movie that started it all in 2008. The classic Red and Gold armour of Iron Man has been his signature trademark. Marvel thought about replacing the Red and Gold suit with Gold and white armour. Glad this too did not happen. The Armour looks too different for our liking.

 5. Scarlet Witch

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

One thing we liked about the MCU’s Scarlet Witch is that they chose the super-hot Elizabeth Olsen for the role. In the Marvel movies, Scarlet Witch is the love interest of the Vision and wears a red overcoat along with black pantsuits. In the revised version, the concept art shows Scarlet Witch with a rather gothic appearance.

 6. The Hulk

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

In the movies, no beast has got the level of clout in the Marvel Universe like the Hulk does. After he went missing in Civil War, the entire crowd was unhappy. Thankfully, the green giant returned with a vengeance in Ragnarok. But here’s the catch – the Hulk was supposed to be a hairy, dashing beast in the rings of Sakaar.

 7. Ant-Man

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Paul Rudd may be a hit on the internet with his quirky antics that gains everyone’s attention, in the movies though, he is a badass as the Ant-Man aka Scott Lang. The guy fought the entire Team Captain America to a standstill based on a crazy ass idea he got from a movie!! The Ant-Man suit is the classic Ultimates version of the Armour we see in the comic books. In the concept art, we see a different version with a full-on glass visor and much more tactical looking HUD displays underneath.

 8. Winter Soldier

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Before he became a good guy, Bucky Barnes was the top assassin of Hydra, a terrorist organization dating back to the Second World War. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky is seen in a black face mask and a bionic arm. In the concept arts, Bucky wears a costume that looks more Russian than Hydra. In another artwork, the Assassin look is taken up a notch.

 9. Hawkeye

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

You think Ronin looks badass?? The Hawkeye look in the comic books could not be replicated in the movies. So they opted for a rather practical approach. With a tinge of purple and a dash of black, the bow-and-arrow-wielding Avenger was in many ways the beating heart of the Avengers. In this concept art, it is shown that the look of Hawkeye could have been actually comic book accurate as well if they had opted for this design which was inspired from the Ultimates Universe.

 10. Thor

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

You would have never imagined Thor in anything other than silver armour, riveted chest plates and a red cape. In this version, we see a Thor that is completely draped in red and white with a full body costume. This concept art was supposed to be for Thor in his gladiator form in Thor: Ragnarok.

 11. Valkyrie

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

In the comic books, Valkyrie is not Black. She is actually a blonde woman with blue eyes. Before the politically correct brigade took over the internet, Valkyrie was supposed to be blonde and white in the movies as well. In this concept art, we see a rather politically incorrect form of Valkyrie riding a black winged stallion.

 12. Star-Lord

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

To be honest, there have been multiple versions of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord that were drawn up by Marvel artists for consideration. Our favourite in the top one from the left in the picture above! What is your pick? Would you have rather liked Star-Lord being shown as a samurai pirate rather than a galactic outlaw?

 13. Groot

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Groot is supposed to look intimidating and cute at the same time. That is what makes Groot so unique and different. With a vocabulary that extends to just three words, the look of the character is what matters the most. In this concept art, we see a Groot that looks damn scary and no parts cute in any way.

 14. Rocket Raccoon

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Rocket is a short fellow with feet as quick as lightning and a mouth as sharp as a blade. The blabbermouth could have looked a lot more different if this concept art was used. Who would have liked an obese and aged Rocket??

 15. Gamora

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

Marvel really likes making radical changes to fan favourite characters. Gamora is known for two things – her reputation as a fierce warrior which has made her infamous as the Galaxy’s fiercest warrior and her trademark green skin. Marvel intended to take away the latter with this concept art.

 16. Drax the Destroyer

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

The Invisible Man was supposed to be played by someone other than Dave Bautista. Believe it or not, Jason Momoa aka Aquaman of the DCEU was the first choice for the role. The concept art shows Momoa’s Drax with huge scars that run all the way from his face to his chest and stomach and a red and black biker jacket.

 17. Falcon

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

The Version of the Falcon we see on screen is not the one Marvel originally planned for the character’s official debut in The Winter Soldier. The initial look was way more impractical to look at. The Falcon suit was now an armour that made Sam Wilson look like a mini jet while wearing it.

 18. War Machine

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

This concept art was designed for Civil War. The one movie where Rhodey literally fell from grace was supposed to feature a rather badass version of the War Machine suit. At first glance, it might not look any different but give I a closer look and you could see several designs not seen in the theatrical cut.

Marvel Superhero Concept Arts

The last Avengers movie to be released under the MCU banner was Avengers: Infinity War. The official film synopsis for the movie reads:

Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artefacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment.

Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just... do things
