Infinity War Directors Talk About Stormbreaker Being More Powerful Than Infinity Gauntlet

Infinity War was a film full of surprises and thrills. While most people went in for the jam-packed action, they actually came out all weepy and sorrowful seeing Thanos win and their favourite heroes get dusted. But it really came down to the wire at the end.

Thanos was only able to sneak in a victory otherwise Thor had almost saved the day with his Stormbreaker. Infinity War would have surely been his film, but Thanos changed it all with a snap!

The major victory took a huge toll on him as his arm was damaged for life using the snap and the Gauntlet was all destroyed. The question still remains whether the Gauntlet could be reused or not. But even if it could be reused, the one thing that we established was that the Stormbreaker is a good countermeasure against the power of the Infinity Gauntlet.

Collider hosted a special screening for Infinity War and then later after that, Directors Joe & Anthony Russo attended a long Q&A session. There they were asked that if the Infinity Gauntlet was reused, would the Stormbreaker be strong enough to stop that. Here’s what the Directors had to say:

“Joe – It certainly has the ability to counteract the Infinity Gauntlet.

Anthony – I think that key moment, though, is that Thanos was caught off guard. He literally just didn’t know the power of what was coming at him. I mean, maybe he could have used the Stones in a different way had he understood what that weapon was, but it came out of nowhere.”

We do have a direct answer to that as the Stormbreaker is pretty effective against the Gauntlet, but the Gauntlet can use each stone individually and you have to think about the fact that Thanos was indeed caught off guard. He could have used the Gauntlet pretty creatively if he did not have to react so instinctively. I guess we would get this question answered for real in Avengers 4.

But still, the Stormbreaker is a pretty might weapon and a solid upgrade from Mjolnir. The new Artbook that has been pretty talked about in the recent days, Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie revealed why the creatives went with the Stormbreaker storyline. Here’s what Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding said:

“I always felt that Beta Ray Bill’s weapon form the comics – Stormbreaker – was a little too similar to Mjolnir. So I was looking to more of the Mjolnir from The Ultimates, where it has more corners and edges, and feels more like a heavy, solid thing as opposed to another Mjolnir-sized weapon–almost that it feels unbalanced. It’s almost too powerful. It really takes someone incredibly powerful just to pick it up because it’s such an unbalanced weapon.”

Avengers 4 is still pretty far away but with the movie playing in the present and revisiting the past time and time again, we know it for a fact that both Stormbreaker and Mjolnir are going to feature in the film. And we may also find out whether there is a second Infinity Gauntlet that Eitri makes.

“Christopher Markus – [Avengers 4] doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is…Also…[the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.

Stephen McFeely – Put it this way, I think [Infinity War] is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.”
