The Men in Black franchise has always been among the funniest movies in Hollywood. Will Smith, in particular, has kept the tone of the movie light and his team up with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin has worked really well among the audiences. All three Men in Black movies have been loved by the fans and now Sony is starting a new franchise with MCU’s Thor Chris Hemsworth at the center of it all.
All three movies in the first trilogy managed to entertain the audiences very well impressed the critics enough and at the same time, also made a huge impact at the box office. The first Men in Black made a hefty $589 Million at a budget of just $90 Million, Men in Black 2 made a good $441 Million at a budget of $140 Million and Men in Black 3 nailed it with a worldwide earning of $624 Million with a budget of $225 Million.
With Sony now taking the major steps of Rebooting many franchises that they have the rights to, rebooting Men in Black was a no-brainer when you look at the profits the first three movies made. At the beginning of the year they brought in the remake of Jumanji, which more or less turned out to be a sequel for that franchise. That movie itself became the highest grossing movie for Sony at the Domestic Box Office, and seeing all that profit, Sony took no time to order a sequel.
They are also bringing Venom back to the big screen with Tom Hardy starring as the titular character in the solo movie which does not have any big connections to Spider-Man. The trailers of Venom do seem to be great and it seems that the movie may pull off similar feats that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle did and Sony is also trying to bring the same magic with the reboot of Men in Black franchise.
As we know by now that The Fate of the Furious Director, F. Gary Gray has helmed this movie and he will be working with the Iron Man script writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. What is really amazing about this reboot is that it has a very capable cast as the amazing duo from Thor: Ragnarok has been signed on in the lead. Yes, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who play Thor and Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are going to be in the lead roles.
While there is still some time before the movie hits the theatres, it is great to know that the production on this movie has begun and we already have the first set photos of Chris Hemsworth who is all suited up to play an agent of MiB. Here, have a look:

The day may not be far when we also get the first look at Tessa Thompson in the film. Legendary actor Liam Neeson is also starring in the movie and he is rumoured to be playing the head of the UK branch of MIB, and along with him, we have Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani who is playing Pawny, “the third sidekick” and a “funny, wise-cracking, sex-driven alien from a civilization that exists on a Chessboard.” The cast of this reboot is not done yet as 3 more members have been added to the movie which includes the international dancing stars “Les Twins,” aka Laurent Nicolas Bourgeois and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois, along with the bad guy from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Rafe Spall.
The last trilogy of the Men in Black franchise was mostly based in the United States division of the organisation, while this new reboot will bring in other factions of this organisation which are spread throughout the world as the reboot planned by Sony is said to be more “global” style franchise as the casting completely suggests that we will be getting a look at the Men in Black Organisation in many parts of the world.
Since it will bring a more global focus into the big picture, this new movie may not necessarily be a reboot as it could very well be a sequel connection to the previous trilogy just like Jumanji and the Mummy franchises did with their reboots. It could just be a story taking place in a different area altogether but could probably be set in the same Universe.
We will only find out about that when the movie comes out on June 14, 2019.
