Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 – The Current Version of the Team Will End With Vol. 3

The Guardians of the Galaxy is the MCU’s most important franchise as Avengers: Infinity War would not have been possible without the introduction of this team of misfits into the team. It was the biggest surprise given to us by Marvel. Their faith in James Gunn and his will to bring this team to life in the absence of other big characters that Marvel didn’t have rights to is commendable! We may have never seen this franchise take form if Marvel would have had X-men with them. But thankfully, we did and now it is all coming to an end in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The first movie is not just among the Top 5 MCU movies of all time, but it will surely end up in a list of the best Superhero movies of all time. In fact, Both the Guardians movies have been extremely successful at the box office and with the critics alike. Their recent appearance in Avengers: Infinity War was totally called for and they may not be among the favourites currently just because of Star-Lord and maybe Gamora, but that was the way the story was written so we cannot blame anyone. If it wasn’t for them, Infinity War may have never happened in the way it did because the Guardians are the ones who introduced us to the cosmic side of the MCU, which Marvel tapped in a big way in Infinity War.

They are actually the ones who formed a bridge between Thanos and the rest of the MCU. the likes of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor may be among the favourites, but the Guardians actually possess even more importance than these three individually. Well, the thing is that the Guardians will only work in a team and the individual characters in the team may not be able to stand their own like the big 3 of Marvel mentioned above. The two Guardians movies have told us quite a bit about the characters, and Infinity War built upon that as well. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in particular focussed on character development. It made Peter Quill aka Star Lord take the centre stage as throughout the movie we learned about the lineage and the heritage of Quill.

Infinity War dwelled on the relationship of Gamora, and Thanos. So there has been plenty of character development in all three movies they have been in. They are surely going to return in Avengers 4 and take the final stand against Thanos in order to save the leftover Universe from him. But everything they have done till now has been leading up to Vol. 3 which James Gunn is currently working on. Gunn mentioned the fact that the third one is the most complex of all, and it will bring in new layers like Adam Warlock.

But recently, something has happened that may confirm that Vol. 3 may be the last time or many of these Guardians to appear in the MCU. Replying to a fan who wrote:

“All these people getting upset when they aren’t reading carefully enough: “Volume 3 will end the trilogy.” Yeah, a trilogy usually means 3. Mr. Gunn could make more beyond the trilogy…”

James Gunn tweeted:

“Well I mean Vol 3 will end this iteration of the Guardians and complete the story of the three films.”

So this confirms that we may never get this team up after Vol. 3 is done. This could very well mean that some of the characters among the Guardians may actually die, and those deaths would be very permanent this time with no possibilities of coming back. It could also mean that the team will get disbanded, as the characters may retire, going their own separate ways after having Guarded the Galaxy for so long.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Vol. 3 will surely set up an Adam Warlock spin-off or Nova may come into play somehow, and these two characters may continue to carry their own franchises in future Phase 4 & 5 movies, so some of the Guardians may return in those movies for minor roles or cameos, or they may actually get their own Spin-offs, like Rocket & Groot going on a journey through space, but this version of the team is only left around for 2 more movies and that will be it.

Vol. 3 will supposedly take up the May 1, 2020 release date.
