It was for the first time that a comic-book movie had so many characters in a single film, doing justice to all of them was simply impossible. But yet Russos pulled off a cinematic masterstroke managing so many great characters and crafted an intriguing thriller using their storylines in the limited time. It was totally unprecedented and one hell of a ride. Most of the superheroes had their shining moment except one who was humiliated.
Bruce Banner aka Hulk was a complete letdown in Avengers: Infinity War. After showing his smashing antics in The Avengers of 2012, his mind-numbing rampage that tore through the Ultron-bots in Avengers: Age of Ultron and continuing his winning streak through the events of Thor: Ragnarok, the Hulk let us all down when he refused to come out after getting a beat down of a lifetime at the hands of Thanos, the Mad Titan at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. So much so that he feared to come out in the rest of the movie.
But wait, there might be a reason why he may have chosen to be a p*ssy and stayed inside his panic room in the movie!! If the rumors are to be trusted, there is a particular reason as well for why the Hulk chose to be a pipsqueak in Avengers 3. The Hulk might become a popular comic book version of himself when he comes out of Banner in Avengers 4. He could become the famous Professor Hulk version of the Jade Giant.
The only thing that remains to be confirmed is how true the rumors are?!?!? Presenting Will Avengers 4 show us the amazingly popular Professor Hulk?!?!?
The newly revealed Concept art for the Avengers shows the various surviving heroes who saw the aftermath in action in its best and brightest suit up again to fight the Mad Titan and undo his actions in the fourth Avengers movie. The costume designed for the Hulk that the Green Goliath is seen wearing in the art is peculiarly interesting. This version is unlike any version of the Hulk seen in the cinema theaters.
The concept art shows the Incredible Hulk with the same look and color, mean and stupidly green, but with a slightly smaller height. The Hulk is also seen wearing some kind of a costume that looks akin to a super suit. What is going on!!!
If you have been a die-hard Hulk fan from the comic books, then you will immediately realize what we are talking about. A smaller version of Bruce Banner’s Hulk exists in the comic books. That version is popularly known by the moniker – ‘PROFESSOR HULK’!!! Let us explain in detail.
In the cinematic and the comic book universe, Bruce Banner and the Hulk are two sides of the same coin, inhabiting the same body. Sometimes Bruce Banner is in control, sometimes the Hulk is in control. They exist independently and allow each other to take over based on their situation. Sometimes one persona forcibly takes over the other. It is all a complex mechanism we rather not get into in detail. The thing is, there aren’t just two personas within the Hulk’s body.
Bruce Banner, the Green Hulk is only two of the three personalities vying for control. The third is called the Gray Hulk and once upon a time, it operated at night under the alias Joe Fixit.
When Doc Samson, a prominent Marvel Universe Psychiatrist, decided to treat Bruce Banner and help him overcome his childhood traumas, all the three versions the Hulk merged within Bruce Banner’s mind. As a result, a more perfect combination of the Hulk came into being which was called the ‘Professor Hulk.’
The Professor Hulk had the genius intelligence of Bruce Banner and the incredible Strength of the Hulk. He was smaller and leaner than the regular Hulk but he was a much better at doing the job. The irony was when Professor Hulk’s emotions got the better of him, this time he would change back into Bruce Banner. This was a failsafe mental protocol installed by Doc Samson to ensure the true Jade Giant never came out.
As time went by, the true angry Hulk did take over and Professor Hulk was lost to the ages. Then a version of the Hulk again came into the Picture in recent issues when the Brotherhood of the Shield attacked and almost killed Banner. Iron Man would later use the Extremis Nano-virus to save him. This would make Banner retort to his ‘Doc Green’ form a version very similar to Professor Hulk but the downside was, it was only a temporary fix. The True Jade Giant would eventually take over again.
The Extremis Virus has already been introduced to the MCU in Iron Man 3. Judging by the new Hulk Concept art for Avengers 4 and the comic books pointing to the same effect, we have to assume Professor Hulk might be coming to the MCU after all.
Hulk fans had been pretty upset with Marvel as he was not getting his stand-alone movie. Mark Ruffalo tried hard to convince studio but all attempts went in vain. But studio responded with an olive branch and built a character arc for Hulk across three different movies and calling it a trilogy. Here’s what Ruffalo said:
“So basically, Kevin Feige pulled me aside before this, and said, ‘If you were gonna do a… if we were going to do a standalone Hulk movie, what would it be?’ And I said, ‘I think it should be this, this, this, and this and this, and ends up like this.’ And he’s like, ‘I love that. Why don’t we do that in the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and then we go into Avengers 3 and 4.’ And I was like, ‘That sounds great!”
It makes sense to introduce Professor Hulk in Avengers 4 as it would be a full circle for Bruce Banner who is more than just a monster and humanity can really use his scientific mind to formulate a strategy to defeat Thanos. Imagine Stark, Shuri, and Banner in the same room! That’s what we need right now.
