Avengers: Infinity War is out and the people are still in disbelief as to how amazing and thrilling this movie is. It was the complete package of everything. Being the longest movie Marvel has ever produced till now, as it was the complete package having emotion, drama, suspense, thrill, humor, sci-fi moments and hardcore action. Marvel has created something no one could expect, which was a movie proven to be the ultimate thriller pleasing anyone and everyone with real stakes.
For more than 5 years, Thanos has been built up as this terrifying supervillain since he first appeared in the end credits of ‘The Avengers’. And without a shade of doubt, Thanos is the greatest comic-book villain we have ever seen, so it was totally worth the wait. He was menacing as hell right from the start when he beat the hell out of Hulk and killed Heimdall and Loki in front of Thor. We knew then he is going to overpower combined forces of Avengers and Guardians. And he did.
He was not just big baddie who is out to wreak havoc on Earth just for the sake of it, he was an evil genius with a plan to bring balance to the universe. He believed the resources are scarce which push vast swathes of people into poverty, so the only way is to wipe off half the life in the universe.
He began his quest for Infinity stones that represent cosmic singularities, which if assembled in a gauntlet, could allow the wielder to annihilate planets at the snap of his fingers. The ending was jaw dropping and felt like a GOT level cliff-hanger.
There is no doubt about the movie-Avengers: Infinity War being absolutely amazing, but as the infamous phrase says, “Nothing is perfect”. The Russo Brothers handled this movie really well. Every aspect they put into play, every character, every scene, and every big plot point, every surprise cameo, and all the action sequences were accepted by the fans with open arms.
But still, every area could not have been satisfied in this movie since it was such a huge event having almost 70 big characters appearing in the movie bringing in their own arcs and origins from different backgrounds.
Something big happened in this movie that was really essential for the narrative, but that happening created a significant plot hole in the story of a previous Phase 2 movie. One of the most important story arcs of this movie was the relationship between Thanos and Gamora.
The origin story of their father-daughter relationship was explained in the movie. It was really crucial as it showed that Thanos is also capable of love, and Gamora was the only person in this entire Universe that he loved no matter what.
In the movie, when Thanos had got his hands on Space, Power and Reality stones, he made a move to acquire the Soul stone. He once sent his daughter Gamora to fetch Soul stone but she lied to him about the location of the Infinity stone. Thanos realized that Gamora is hiding something from him, so he captured her sister Nebula and tortured her until she gives up the location.
They went to Vormir for Soul stone, and there Red Skull was guarding the gates. He told Thanos that the only way he could get the stone is if he sacrifices the soul of someone he loved. The next thing we saw was Thanos literally lifting his daughter and three her off the cliff. This entire episode left Mad Titan in tears.
We saw that Thanos adopted Gamora from the Zehoberei planet in his quest to bring balance to the lives of that planet. 20 or so years ago, Thanos attacked the planet as its resources were being replenished. So he actually killed half the population of that planet, and later he explained the results of his actions.
Thanos explained that after what he did, the Zehoberei people actually lived in peace, got a full belly of food every day and they were able to use up the resources of the planet efficiently and adequately. So, according to Thanos’ deeds, half the planet was still left alive, and this was the mantra used until the very end of the movie.
But if you go back to the introduction of Gamora in the first Guardians movie, it was revealed that Gamora is the last of her race as the Zehoberi people were entirely slaughtered by Thanos, leaving her the only survivor. So, this creates a difference between what we knew and thought of her. The writers usually ignore certain small details to tell the best story possible even when they know that their choices may lead to creating certain plot holes.
So, this does make people wonder what was this choice of telling Gamora’s altered backstory an accident or was it deliberate? Considering how protective James Gunn is of his Guardians of the Galaxy, he would not have let the history of his characters be rewritten, but since Thanos’ motivations for killing half the planet’s population were not actually developed back then by the writers, Gunn took a call and told that she is the only one that survives from her planet.
Thanos’ motivations over here had to be altered for the movie as there was no Lady Death in this story that he needed to impress, and an alternative storyline was created here to establish him as a big bad with senses, and not just someone who comes in and slaughters people for sport. He is an anti-hero if you think about it, as his doings are wrong, but the end results that he seeks for the greater good of the Universe, in the long run, are actually beneficial for the future.
Since this story was so great and thrilling, we could very well ignore this little detail creating the plot hole like the writers of the movie and James Gunn did.
