Here’s How The Ancient One’s Death Was Directly Tied To Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War was the biggest movie Marvel has ever produced, and it was surely the biggest thriller of any Superhero movie. It leaves us on a cliffhanger which we could have never expected. The movie departed from a template that MCU had created for movies over a period of time in so many ways. It had a darker tone and real stakes that had huge ramifications for the larger MCU unlike previous movies that were light-hearted superhero adventures without any impact.

It portrayed Thanos as the big bad of MCU and waiting for so many years to make him feel his terror was totally worth it. He only had one goal i.e to bring balance to the universe. He believed that overpopulation in the galaxy is a massive drain over limited resources, hence it must be checked. His motivations were justified in his mind, and he actually was the hero of his own story. He actually thinks of himself as the savior of the universe who is strong willed and willing to step up to take the hardest decisions on behalf of entire galaxy. He literally wants to play god.

As we saw, Thanos was not just a Mad Titan who wants to destroy everything and everyone that comes in his way. His methods are brutal but he has a proper reasoning behind what he did. It was not right way as this does not give true meaning to life, and neither is it fair for the ones who died randomly. They did not get the equal chance to rejoice life, but since the disintegration was random and necessary in Thanos’ mind, it had to happen.

He went in search of six Infinity stones scattered across the universe, assembled them in a gauntlet and snapped his fingers. As the Russos put it, it was like a heist movie where Thanos would steal Infinity stones and leave behind trail of death and destruction. Here’s What they said:

“With “Infinity War,” the biggest new element to the movie is Thanos and the fact that he’s entering the storytelling in a very bold, strong way, to the degree that he’s almost one of the leads. We’ve shaped an interesting narrative around him that in some ways leans heavily on a heist film in the fact that he’s going after the infinity stones in a much bolder, successful way than he has in the past. The entire movie has that energy of the bad guy being one step ahead of the heroes. We looked at a lot of movies that had that heist-style energy to them, and that brought some inspiration”.

There were so many aspects and characters that came into play for this project, and almost 70 characters came in, bringing their own story arcs into the film. Several stories came together converging into the first part of this epic finale that Marvel has been building up for years now. It was the logical culmination of everything that had happened in the MCU over a period of 10 years spanning 19 movies.

You will be really surprised to see how one part of the movie references from the previous ones. There were many lines that were exact references from the previous movies but used by different people in different contexts.

But here we are talking about the aspects that actually set up the Story arc of Infinity War. While all the heroes come in having different pasts and impactful story arcs in this one, Thanos also came in with his own reasons for choosing this particular timing. Until this time, Thanos was not just sitting on his chair, as he had been upon his mission of bringing balance to the planets one by one. But he had not been able to make the big move until now because Planets like Asgard, Earth, Nidavellier and many others were under the protection of certain beings which had now gone.

Ancient One’

Beings like Ego the Living Planet who was a Celestial, Odin and the Ancient One were actually the powerful beings that were the biggest hurdles in the path of Thanos. Odin and the Ancient One in particular prevented Earth and the other Realms from threats like Thanos. Odin kept the 9 Realms in order, while the Ancient One guarded Earth from all the mystical threats. Odin died leaving Thor to be the protector of Asgard and the Nine Realms and the Ancient One died leaving matters into the hands of Doctor Strange. Their very last moments were moments of Wisdom for Thor and Strange.

Both Strange and Thor had major roles to play in Infinity War. While we know how Thor’s story arc came to be throughout, we still haven’t fully understood Strange’s arc properly as it has been divided into two and the impact of his arc is huge in particular. We saw that Strange went across 14 Million Six Hundred and Five alternate futures and found just one where the Avengers would actually win.

An Eagle-Eyed fan on Reddit actually spotted this particular Story thread to be referenced in Doctor Strange’s own solo movie. In the very last moments of the Ancient One when both Doctor Strange and she were in the Astral plane, she told Strange that someone has to break the rules for the greater good of the Society. Here’s what this Eagle Eyed fan wrote:

Well, this is pretty interesting. Considering what Strange did in Infinity War was similar to what the Ancient One used to do. In her very last dying moment, she gave Strange the know how to save Earth from threats like Thanos. Following his master, Strange used the Time Stone to look into the future, and find one outcome that actually had the Avengers to come out on top.

Unfortunately, this plan of Strange does not involve himself, and it involved Thanos to assemble all the Infinity Stones and wipe half the Population with a snap. Still, it was a great tie in of the Ancient One from Doctor Strange with Avengers: Infinity War. We cannot wait to see how Strange’s plan comes to be in Avengers 4, which will come out next year on May 3. Here’s plot synopsis by an entertainment magazine:

“A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”

Avengers Infinity War is currently playing in theatres worldwide and is going strong. Directed by Russo Brothers. Produced by Kevin Feige & Co. Script is co-written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
