Here’s Why Oliver Queen Should Dump Felicity And Start Dating Black Siren

The new season of Arrow has begun and it is off to an insane start. It picked up from the cliff-hanger of season five finale which was perhaps the best episode in show’s history, maybe in CW history as well. It was a thrilling, edge-of-the-seat ride that never failed to give goose-bumps. It injected new energy into the TV franchise which lost momentum after season 4 debacle. The show has now redeemed itself from the past sins. The fans are now cheering and looking forward to the sixth season.

The first episode was titled “Fallout” gave us the answers to the lingering questions from the last year. While Felicity, Curtis, Rene, Diana, Quentin, Diggle and Slade Wilson made it out alive, we now know that Malcolm Merlyn could not survive the mine blast, Samantha (mother of William) died in Oliver’s arms and Thea Queen is barely breathing. In the second episode, Oliver’s friend cum enemy Anatoly came back to wreck Star City and Mayor Oliver Queen managed to bury the story that he is the Green Arrow by proving that the photo released is doctored.

In the season 5 finale, amidst all the mayhem and craziness unleashed by Prometheus/ Adrian Chase, Felicity kissed Oliver which totally surprised him. When he asked her why now, she said we will talk about this later. The Mayor of Star city aka Oliver Queen is known for leading an adventurous love life as he has been in relationships with multiple women – first love cum teenage sweetheart Laurel Lance (deceased), her sister Sara Lance (Legend on a Wave-rider), Samantha (mother of William), Susan Williams (reporter, Star city) and Felicity Smoak.

Let’s go back to the season 4 and understand how Felicity’s mind works. In the episode titled “Lost Souls”, the main focus was the character arc of Felicity Smoak, her relationship with Oliver and her life’s decisions in general. She fell for Oliver and decided to flee Starling city for a better life, without thinking about Ray even once. Ray Palmer had survived the explosion at Palmer Tech, was captured by Damien Darhk and sending distress messages to Felicity, but she was too vested in her love life that she did not bother. She confronted her own inner demons which were buried deep in her heart until now, she felt that somewhere in her lust for Oliver, she lost her real identity and that she was never meant to be with Oliver. After some good convincing by her mom, she realized that Oliver is the love of her life and despite nothing much in common between them, they discovered themselves in each other.

At that point of time, Marc Guggenheim said:

“The relationship between Oliver and Felicity will last longer than it ever has.” But all she has done is make Oliver’s life more complicated.

The current executive producer of the show Wendy Mericle disagrees with Marc and told TV Guide that Oliver may be learning more about true love this season and it could be with another character. Here’s what he said:

“It’s Oliver and one other character in the Arrowverse’s story. It really explores the question of true love, and what does that look like? It’s emotionally really compelling, and you’re going to be surprised by what he learns and how he learns it and who he learns it form. It’s pretty crazy stuff, I’m not going to lie.”

It’s highly unlikely that the other character with whom Oliver could possibly be romantically linked is someone totally new. The season 5 finale strongly suggested a reboot of Oliver-Felicity relationship as evident by an awkward kiss on Lian Yu. Marc Guggenheim believes that season 6 will explore the outcome of kiss and said:

“We put them on a very specific trajectory at the end of season 5. I think it would be very schizophrenic for us to suddenly take them off that trajectory.”

But there is one person who would be best for Oliver i.e The Black Siren (Laurel’s Earth-2 dopple-ganger) who was believed to be dead on Lian Yu but someone saved her who landed on an island in the helicopter. Five months hence, she is wreaking havoc in Star city, killing policemen, attacking Team Arrow’s bunker and stole Curtis prototype T-Sphere. This could be Michael Emerson’s mystery character. Well, whoever that is, the audience owe him a debt of gratitude as losing one Laurel was enough.

If you think about it, this is the perfect idea for the show-makers as they are often accused of robbing fans of Oliver-Laurel romance. Black Siren is an incredibly skilled fighter, possess a meta-human canary cry and is closer to comic-book Black Canary. On the other hand, Laurel Lance was a realistic, grounded character who was the lawyer first and vigilante later.

It would be redemption for the show who poorly treated Laurel’s character by igniting a romantic spark between Oliver and Black Siren. Moreover, Oliver is only one who cares about her (except Quentin Lance ofcose). She first led Metalocalypse on Central city as she was with Zoom and then she destroyed Team Arrow on Lian Yu. But Oliver still sees good in her. In fact, she told him that she fell in love with Oliver Queen of her Earth who tragically died that led her down to the dark path.

Well, it doesn’t matter with whom Oliver end up with as season 6 looks pretty amazing anyways. But if it does happen, let’s hope Oliver can make it work this time.
