The talented filmmaking team behind Scream 6, Radio Silence, has announced their next project: a new Universal monster movie. Radio Silence comprises directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet and producer Chad Villella, who are responsible for movies like Ready or Not, and of course, the highly-anticipated Scream 6. According to a report from THR, the script for the film was written by Stephen Shields, with frequent Radio Silence collaborator Guy Busick credited for revisions.
The plot of the movie is shrouded in mystery, but it was revealed that the film was previously titled Dracula’s Daughter. Apparently, the story follows a group of kidnappers who abduct several teens, only to realize too late that one of them is the offspring of the infamous vampire. It remains to be seen if Radio Silence will stick with the Dracula’s Daughter concept, or if they have since pivoted to a different monster. Universal has a number of characters to choose from who could benefit from a modern update, such as Gill-man or the Wolf Man.
However, if they do stick with the Dracula’s Daughter idea, it would fit perfectly with Radio Silence’s filmmaking sensibilities. The Dracula’s Daughter idea is definitely in line with the team’s previous movies. Ready or Not features a strong female lead who takes on her murderous in-laws, and the two most recent Scream movies also feature two female central heroes. All three films also include dark comedy and self-awareness that would fit well with a story about a vampire’s offspring.
If the story does involve Dracula’s daughter, it wouldn’t be the first movie of its kind. The 1936 film of the same name already explored the concept. Nevertheless, Radio Silence has a track record of putting its own unique spin on familiar tropes, so it’s safe to say that their take on the concept would be fresh and innovative. There are, however, a few Universal Classic Monsters that seem to be off the table. For example, The Invisible Man was recently adapted by Leigh Whannel, so it’s unlikely that Radio Silence will tackle that character.
The Mummy is also a no-go, given the 2017 remake’s failure at the box office. While there’s still no news on whether the monster in the film will be Dracula’s daughter or someone else entirely, one thing is clear: Universal’s classic monsters are in good hands with Radio Silence. Their filmmaking sensibilities, as evidenced by their past work, would make any monster story they take on a thrilling and exciting experience for audiences.
At this point, it’s unclear when the movie will start filming or when it will be released. However, fans of horror and monsters alike can rest assured that Radio Silence is hard at work crafting their next terrifying masterpiece. With their impressive track record of hits, it’s no wonder that fans are eagerly anticipating whatever they have in store.
