Russo Brothers Express Interest in Directing Batman for James Gunn’s DCU

DC fans have been anticipating the upcoming slate of projects from DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The duo had previously announced the first ten titles planned for their DC Universe slate back in January, and it looks like two directors, who are no strangers to the superhero blockbuster space, wouldn’t mind joining in on the fun. In an interview with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian, Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, expressed their interest in potentially working with Peter Safran and James Gunn’s DCU and revealed their desire to helm something related to Batman.

The Russo brothers were asked about the possibility of working with DC characters, to which Anthony responded, “We don’t get asked a lot about DC characters.” Joe then chimed in, expressing their admiration for James Gunn and his vision for James Gunn’s DCU. He also mentioned that they would love to work on something related to Batman, which happens to be one of their favorite comic book characters. The duo spoke about the comics they collected as kids, with Joe revealing that he collected Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman comics the most.

However, he acknowledged that there have been many iterations of Batman and that it would be challenging to bring something fresh and new to the table. Anthony added that Batman had been well explored, which indicates that they might be interested in working on a different DC character. In their upcoming project, Citadel, a global spy agency tasked with upholding the safety and security of all people has fallen eight years ago, destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate that manipulates the world from the shadows. Elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) narrowly escaped with their lives but had their memories wiped. They’ve remained hidden, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts.

One night, Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love. The series also stars Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer, Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy, Roland Møller as Anders Silje and Davik Silje, Caoilinn Springall as Hendrix Conroy.

As previously announced, the initial DC Studios slate for “Gods and Monsters” will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave, and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will also include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn and Safran said in a statement when their roles were first announced:

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children. We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved.”

Their commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by their commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. The duo expressed their excitement to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as they tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.
