Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things creators, are returning with a new Netflix series called The Boroughs, which they executive produce. These people are presently working on Stranger Things’ fifth and final season, as well as other productions set in the same universe, including an animated series and a live-action spinoff. The Boroughs is a new series from the writers of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, according to Variety.
The series is set in a retirement community in the New Mexico desert, where a group of unusual heroes must come together to prevent an extraterrestrial menace from snatching the one thing they don’t have… time. This seems really fantastic and will undoubtedly be a smash for the Duffer brothers. In a statement, the Duffers said they’ve been fans of Addiss and Matthews’ writing for a long time, and when they pitched them their idea for The Boroughs, they knew they had something very special on their hands.
While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching. The Boroughs will consist of eight episodes, and Addiss and Matthews will be the showrunners. The series will be produced by the Duffers’ Upside Down Pictures. No word on who will star in the show yet, but the description hints at an older cast of characters through its retirement home setting.
This is Addiss and Matthews’ first project with Netflix since The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was canceled in 2020. The Boroughs has a smaller setting than the Dark Crystal franchise, so it’s likely the show will tell its story within its eight episodes. The Duffers have said that The Boroughs will be reminiscent of Stranger Things, so we can expect more supernatural elements, adventure, and misfits coming together to save the day.
We don’t know much about The Boroughs yet, but the critical acclaim for both Stranger Things and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance gives us hope that it will be a quality show. The use of characters from a retirement home in the cast is an original spin on a supernatural TV story, and with the seasoned creatives and inventive idea behind it, we’re excited to see what The Boroughs has in store. The Duffer brothers have proven their talent for creating unique and engaging shows, and we have no doubt that The Boroughs will be another success. With a talented cast and crew, and an intriguing premise, this show is sure to be a hit among Netflix viewers.
