Netflix Announces Animated Stranger Things Spinoff

Netflix has just announced an animated Stranger Things spinoff series, as the original series has been a huge success for the streaming giant since its debut in 2016. The supernatural fantasy-horror series, which is set in the 1980s and follows the exploits of the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana, makes references to iconic 80s productions like E. T. along with Stephen King’s writings, The Goonies, and Dungeons & Dragons.

The Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things, and Shawn Levy, the director, along with Dan Cohen and Eric Robles, will produce the new show. The Duffer Brothers expressed their excitement for the undertaking in a statement, saying they had “always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving. They are already in awe of the animators, and they are eager to share more with their fans.

Although the original series is coming to a close with season 5, the universe of Stranger Things will live on in this new animated series. Netflix has previously experimented with animated spinoffs, such as the 2021 movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which explored the origin story of Geralt’s mentor Vesemir. However, Stranger Things is the perfect property for an animated series, given its heavy incorporation of 80s pop culture.

The 1980s were a heyday for animated spinoffs of popular franchises, with series like The Real Ghostbusters running from 1986 to 1991. The late 80s and early 90s were flooded with animated shows based on movies like Little Shop of Horrors, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Rambo, Robocop, and The Karate Kid. With its retro setting, Stranger Things is perfectly suited for an animated spinoff. At this point, it’s unclear which members of the Stranger Things cast will be involved in the animated series. However, the key to keeping it feeling like an organic part of the universe will be to maintain the retro atmosphere.

By making it an animated series, the creators have ensured that this will be the case. Fans can’t wait to see what kind of adventures the characters will have in this new format!
