Another Major Franchise Show Canceled By Disney+

Disney+ has disappointed fans of two of its established film franchises by canceling the streaming television series Willow and The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. And now, it looks like another major franchise show has met the same fate. According to Deadline, Disney+ has given the chop to National Treasure: Edge of History, a continuation of the National Treasure movies. The series featured Lisette Oliviera as Jess Valenzuela and Catherine Zeta-Jones in a leading roles. Even Justin Bartha, who played Riley in the movies, made an appearance in one episode as a guest star.

Despite boasting a diverse cast and the backing of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original National Treasure movies, the spin-off failed to gain enough traction to survive. One of the likely reasons for its downfall is the lack of involvement from lead actor Nicolas Cage, who played Ben Gates in both National Treasure films. Fans were likely not interested in committing to a six-episode series without Cage as the main character.

It’s a shame that the series didn’t work out, but it’s not all bad news for fans of National Treasure. A third film featuring Cage is reportedly still in development limbo but is apparently still on track to be produced. It remains to be seen if the cancellation of the TV show will affect the plans for the film. National Treasure: Edge of History lasted only one season on the Disney+ platform, and all ten episodes are currently streaming. The first two movies in the franchise, National Treasure and National Treasure: Book of Secrets, are also available to watch on the platform.

The cancellation of these franchise spin-off shows is likely due to the current cutbacks at Disney, as the company has been forced to make tough decisions in response to the ongoing pandemic. It’s unfortunate for fans who were hoping to see more of their favorite characters, but it’s a reminder that the entertainment industry is not immune to the effects of the pandemic. Despite the challenges, Disney+ continues to offer a wide range of content for viewers to enjoy.

In addition to its original programming, the platform boasts an impressive library of movies and TV shows from across the Disney universe, including classics like The Lion King and newer hits like The Mandalorian. As the pandemic continues to affect the entertainment industry, it’s possible that more shows and movies will face cancellations. But for now, fans can continue to enjoy the vast selection of content available on Disney+.
