Amazon Developing RoboCop, Stargate, And Legally Blonde TV & Film Projects

Get ready for some exciting news from Amazon Studios! As there are a few movies and TV projects at development at Amazon that are based on some classic titles from MGM’s library, including RoboCop, Stargate, Legally Blonde, Fame, Barbershop, The Magnificent Seven, Pink Panther, and The Thomas Crown Affair. Amazon’s already in talks about a third Legally Blonde TV series. They’re also considering new films and shows for Stargate and RoboCop.

Plus, there are series adaptations of Fame, Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven in active development. And there’s even talk of an animated Pink Panther movie and a Poltergeist project. This news comes after Amazon’s acquisition of MGM’s extensive catalog of 4,000 film titles and 17,000 TV episodes, which was completed in March 2022. Since then, Amazon’s been sorting through MGM’s collection to identify which titles would be best suited for reimagining for today’s audiences.

One property that Amazon’s not planning on using for new content is the James Bond film franchise. Even though it’s arguably the crown jewel of MGM’s catalog, there are currently no plans to bring the franchise to television beyond the upcoming unscripted competition series, 007’s Road to a Million. This eight-episode reality competition show, inspired by the adventures of James Bond, will follow two-person teams as they compete in challenges and race around the world to win £1 million GBP.

Amazon has also been expanding its streaming content recently. Besides new projects for select MGM titles, Amazon gave an eight-episode straight-to-series order for an adaptation of Cruel Intentions. The upcoming series will likely be released through the company’s free streaming service Freevee, although there is a possibility that it could end up on Prime Video. The new adaptation will be unconnected to the original 1999 teen film and follow two step-siblings as they do whatever it takes to stay on top at an elite Washington D.C. college.

Additionally, Amazon recently acquired streaming rights for the DC animated series Batman: Caped Crusader, which was originally in development at HBO Max. It’s exciting to see Amazon breathing new life into classic titles and bringing them to a new generation of viewers. With so many projects in the works, it looks like Amazon’s commitment to quality streaming content is only going to continue to grow. So keep an eye out for updates on your favorite titles, and get ready for some new favorites, too!
