Shazam 2 Box Office Gets Worst DCEU Opening Performance Ever

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe, is not off to a great start at the box office. According to early reports, Shazam 2 box office has one of the worst opening weekends in the franchise’s history. While it’s still too early to make definitive predictions, the signs are not encouraging for star Zachary Levi and the rest of the Shazam Family. Fury of the Gods sees the titular superhero return for another adventure, this time facing off against new threats in the form of the villainous Hespera and her sister Kalypso.

The film marks the second time Levi has portrayed the character of Shazam, following his debut in the 2019 film of the same name. Despite the popularity of the character and the success of the first movie, early box office numbers for Fury of the Gods have been disappointing. The film’s Thursday preview gross was the lowest in the history of the DCEU, coming in dead last behind every other entry in the franchise. This is particularly concerning given that Levi has stated that his future with the franchise depends on the success of this film.

Of course, it’s still possible that Fury of the Gods could pick up steam as it moves into its opening weekend and beyond. However, the current trends are not encouraging. The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with many praising its humor and action but criticizing its plot and pacing. Some industry experts have suggested that the film’s lackluster box office performance may be due in part to changes behind the scenes at DC. The franchise recently underwent a major overhaul, with James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over as co-CEOs.

It remains to be seen how this new leadership will impact future DC films, but for now, it seems that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is struggling to find its footing in the post-Gunn/Safran era. Despite the disappointing box office numbers, there are still reasons for fans of the Shazam franchise to be optimistic. The film reportedly had a relatively low budget compared to other comic book movies, which means it will likely break even-even if it doesn’t perform well at the box office. Additionally, the film has already been praised for its representation, with multiple LGBTQ characters appearing in prominent roles.

It’s also worth noting that Fury of the Gods is not the first DCEU film to face criticism and poor box office performance. Many of the franchise’s entries, including Justice League and Suicide Squad, were heavily criticized by both fans and critics alike. However, the franchise has managed to bounce back in the past, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t do so again in the future. Ultimately, only time will tell whether Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be remembered as a success or a failure. For now, fans of the franchise will have to wait and see how the film performs in the coming weeks and months.

Whether or not the film’s lackluster box office numbers are indicative of larger problems within the DCEU remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the superhero genre is more competitive than ever, and even established franchises like Shazam are not guaranteed success.
