Henry Cavill Return as Superman in Man of Steel 2:
Things with Superman haven’t been great onscreen ever since Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The saddest part about it is that the great potential of Henry Cavill has been underutilized because of that. Batman V Superman gave more importance to Batman, but the final bit really belonged to Superman. Then, Justice League would have made things better but WB just had to do the whole CGI thing. Then to add kerosene to fire, WB actually showed us a headless Man of Steel in Shazam!
So, there’s a lot of bad blood around Superman right now. With Snyder having been pushed out of the DCEU, WB is looking at new things to take up. That’s how Todd Phillips’ Joker came into picture. And Ben Affleck failing to deliver a Batman movie also led to Matt Reeves stepping in with his own independent story. The same thing will happen with Superman as Negotiations are still on with JJ Abrams. The downside of the story – Man of Steel has been hung out to dry.
But Henry Cavill still keeps shining a bright light on the topic of Superman every now and then. Just a little while back, he said that he hasn’t given up on the role. He claimed that he still wants to return as the Man of Steel. And now, in a recent interview with FOX 5’s Kevin McCarthy, Cavill went on to give us an “S” (hope) by saying that he’s still attached to the role of Superman and would still want to tell a story related to Man of Steel. He said:
“I’m always interested to see how that stuff [Snydercut] turns out but that is very much a chapter of my past, I would rather talk about what is going to happen in the future. The future of Superman, how I can express that character from the comic books, which ties in nicely to Man of Steel. Man of Steel, I really like that movie, and I’d like to be able to tell the story where it was left at that point.”
Well, it’d be awesome if WB went forward with a Man of Steel 2. But they’ve clearly got a lot on their plate right now. They’ve probably got films packed till 2023 as the Green Lantern Corps. script will also be done by the end of the year. So, there is no space for Superman. Moreover, Henry Cavill himself is going to be busy with The Witcher for multiple seasons to come.
Given the direction WB has been taking with every project, we’ve got a clear indication that they’re looking to move away with everything that Zack Snyder built. They don’t really consider Superman relevant, and would want to return to the character with a different version, just like Batman. And, it was recently revealed that Michael B. Jordan met with WB earlier this year, but he wasn’t willing to wait for 2-3 years.
Those who want Henry Cavill to return (just like me) shouldn’t lose hope. Why? Because Black Adam is getting his own film in 2021. And, if there’s one epic match up that fans would want to see even more than Black Adam vs. Shazam is Black Adam vs. Superman. And it could be a possibility once Black Adam is done fighting Shazam in Shazam! 3. Dwayne Johnson would definitely want that, and with the kind of position he currently is in, he surely has a big pull over Studios. So, if there’s someone who could make Cavill’s Superman return possible, it is The Rock!
All we can do is hope. There’s one thing Henry Cavill said either in 2017 or 2018, and that was – Man of Steel 2 could come out anytime between 2019 & 2045. So, we should actually hold this statement as a fact until WB officially does something with Superman.
