Henry Cavill’s New DC Role Possibilities Addressed By James Gunn

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that he has met with Henry Cavill, former Superman actor, to discuss a potential new role in the DC Universe (DCU). As the franchise moves into a new era with Chapter 1, titled Gods and Monsters, much of what has come before is being left behind. This has been seen in the discussions surrounding Cavill’s future with the franchise, as it was announced that a new Superman movie was in the works but the character “not be played by Henry Cavill” going forward.

Despite this announcement, Gunn has reiterated that he and Cavill have discussed finding a new role for the actor in the DCU after his time as Superman. Gunn has confirmed that they have discussed other roles with Cavill, but playing Frankenstein in the animated HBO Max series Creature Commandos is not one of them. This was in response to rumors that Gunn was considering Cavill for the role, which Gunn dismissed as “completely false.” However, he did confirm that he and Cavill have had conversations about finding a new DCU role for the actor.

Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran met with Cavill and discussed “exciting possibilities to work together,” but did not specify which roles were brought up. Despite the openness of Gunn and Safran to having Cavill back in the DCU, it is clear that he will not be playing Superman or Frankenstein. The same sort of offer has been extended to Jason Momoa, who could potentially move on from his Aquaman role to play Superman villain Lobo. While Momoa seems enthusiastic about the idea, Cavill might not be as inclined.

It is possible that Cavill is done with DC at the moment, after years away from the Superman role, he was asked to come back for Black Adam, potentially hinting at a solidified future for his version of the character. However, those plans were pulled, and Cavill’s time in the red and blue was officially done. If Cavill were to be interested in the idea of jumping on board the Gunn and Safran train, he would have plenty of roles to pick from. One potential role could be playing the DCU’s version of Jor-El, Superman’s father. This would not be a major starring part but could serve as the perfect tribute to his time as the Man of Tomorrow.

In summary, despite the announcement that a new Superman movie will not feature Henry Cavill, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that he and Cavill have discussed finding a new role for the actor in the DCU. While it is unclear which role Cavill may take on, it is clear that he will not be playing Superman or Frankenstein. If Cavill were to join the DCU once again, he would have plenty of options, including playing the DCU’s version of Jor-El.
