Avatar 2 Beats Titanic And Becomes Third Highest-Grossing Film Of All Time

Did you hear the news? Avatar 2 beats Titanic to become the third-highest-grossing movie of all time! The sequel was released in theaters on December 16, 2022, a whopping 13 years after the original Avatar. James Cameron wrote and directed the sequel, and many of the main cast members returned, with a few newcomers like Kate Winslet, Brian Dalton, and Jack Champion joining in. This time around, we get to follow the Na’vi and their new water-dwelling friends, the Metkayina clan, as they take on the humans once again.

It was a close call, but Avatar: The Way of Water finally passed after coming very close to toppling it last weekend. The sequel’s worldwide box office total reached $2.2433 billion, beating Titanic’s $2.2428 billion (via Variety). It’s a big win for James Cameron, who now has three of the top four highest-grossing movies of all time. The Way of Water still has its sights set on surpassing Titanic on the domestic rankings, though, with its $658 million in the U.S. and Canada trailing behind Titanic by less than $14 million for the No. 8 spot. Now, the only two movies left standing between the sequel and the No. 1 spot are the original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.

But that’s still a long way to the top. Avatar 2 is still behind Endgame by around $555 million, and it needs another $125 million to overtake the first Avatar movie. The real question is, can the movie keep racking up enough money at the box office to reach that goal? Despite opening to $134 million domestically, almost double the first Avatar’s $77 million opening, the sequel hasn’t been able to keep up with its predecessor. Avatar has been outperforming its sequel every weekend since each film’s third weekend of release. The sequel’s estimated four-day total of $7.5 million this weekend, its 10th since its release, was less than half of the original’s three-day total of $16 million in its 10th outing.

However, The Way of Water’s box office only dropped 15% this weekend, while Avatar’s drop during the same weekend represented a 31% dip. In the international arena, the sequel trails behind the original in key European countries, but it’s already surpassed the original in the crucial Chinese market. It’s unclear how much The Way of Water’s box office will be affected by a potential release in Russia, as the original movie made over $116 million there during its original release.

But one factor that could impact Avatar 2’s final box office performance is whether it gets the same re-release treatment as the first Avatar, which got four re-releases that added another $180 million to its worldwide total. All in all, it’s an exciting time for Avatar fans as it continues to break records and climb the ranks of the highest-grossing movies of all time. With its stunning visuals, captivating storyline, and talented cast, it’s no surprise that the movie is doing so well at the box office. It’s safe to say that we can expect big things from Avatar 2 and beyond as the franchise continues to thrive.
