Tom Cruise was one of the producers on Top Gun: Maverick and he has been a major factor in having Paramount delay his latest movie constantly. First, the movie was supposed to come out in 2019, but it got pushed as Cruise was learning to fly a fighter jet for real. Then, COVID kept pushing the movie. Paramount could have released the movie in 2021 as well. But the studio and the creatives just knew the value of this project. They knew what a special movie they made, so they didn’t want to put it out in muddy waters. And looking at the latest Top Gun 2 box office report, it seems they were right to delay the movie for 2 or more years.
Top Gun 2 Box Office Report
Tenet was pushed out during the pandemic in mostly untested waters and it did not make as much money as it should have. Something similar happened with many other big movies that would have killed at the Box Office in a non-pandemic era. So, Cruise and co just didn’t want to take that risk. They’ve released their latest movie at a time when Box Office is back on its feet and the COVID pandemic is mostly an afterthought. Hence, Top Gun: Maverick opened up with a historic $124 million on its first weekend domestically. Counting the numbers of the first four days (Memorial Day Weekend) the movie ended up with a whopping $151 million.
Thank you to everyone who saw #TopGun: Maverick and helped make it a historic opening weekend.

But now after its second weekend, the film has suffered only a 32% drop, which speaks volumes for its quality. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened with $187 million but dropped to $61 million on its second weekend (67% drop) as the quality of the film didn’t really match the hype. But Top Gun 2 has made $86 million at the domestic Box Office this weekend and that shows how the film will have strong legs in the coming weeks (despite facing competition from Jurassic World: Dominion and Lightyear). People are just loving this film!
Worldwide Box Office
As far as the worldwide numbers are concerned, Top Gun: Maverick stands at a total of $548 million (Domestic – $291 million; International – $257 million). The film will probably beat The Batman ($770 million) in the next two weeks. And if the revenue does not drop more than 50% next week, then the film would prove to have long legs at the box office. And we could look at Maverick becoming Tom Cruise’s first-ever Billion Dollar movie in his long-running career. That will also ensure a third movie for the Top Gun franchise.
